First, I am so glad you are still here. You have the luxury of looking back at what you would have missed had you followed through. If you had died you may have alleviated your pain, but you would have only increased the pain and suffering of those who love you. This is what I mean when I say suicide is selfish. We are not alone. What we do affects our loved ones, friends, and acquaintances. There is an interesting book called The Midnight Library, and with every choice the woman makes not only is her outcome changed but the outcomes of those around her. Negative emotions stick to us like glue and positive emotions tend to bounce off and be easily forgotten. This is an evolutionary survival mechanism. It is essential for your survival to pay attention to and remember the things that will kill or harm you. But somehow negative emotions from things that won’t kill you work the same system and it is difficult to shake them off. Strategies for when life is tough. 1) you aren’t alone – no one gets a happily ever after 2) focus on the good stuff – make a point of noticing it each day. This helps build resilience 3) ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing helping or harming me?”

Blaming is reaction to grief and there is so much grief here. This is a time to comfort each other. We can all do better.

We don’t get through life without suffering. Suicide does not teach resilience and influences the young to think when they face hardship it is an option. This is a mental health medical emergency for his children. Say the worst-case scenario is true, and he had a substance use disorder and sex addiction, and because of the scandal was facing $7 million in debt. Can one recover from that? Michael Jackson was accused of child molestation, Tiger Woods sex addiction, Kim Hyun-joong domestic violence – the list goes on. Rehabilitation, restitution, self-reflection, and resilience. There could have been a tomorrow.

Artist are special people. They are more sensitive and can transform that sensitivity into their craft. Brother, I wish I could have coddled and protected you in this dark alley. I wish I could have shown you the next page in the script as the protagonist climbs out of the dark pit and slays his dragons. I’m mad at you for dying. Suicide is selfish. You weren’t thinking about your family, friends, or the strangers that admired you. And I’m heartbroken that your sensitivity, your gift, let you feel pain so exquisitely that it killed you. I hope you are in the arms of the angels and that they are comforting you.
