It can be confusing ! as the story does become complex, but it does answer most of it as you continue

Thanks to the character map, we learn that the white-robed person in the trailer who looks like Ji Ling is named Ji Shi. Of course, with all the names in the show being crafted to reveal more about each character, Ji Shi also has meaning behind it.

In episode 19, LWY explains what Ji Ling means by Ji (寄) as in fleeting life and Ling (灵 ) as in a kindred understanding

Ji (寄) as in fleeting life, but the character for Shi (食) revealed something dark about the character.

Shi (食) as in to eat, consume, rely on for sustenance

together you get a character name Ji (寄) as in fleeting life, Shi (食) as in to eat, consume, rely on for sustenance

so Ji Shi can roughly mean A fleeting life that survives by consuming.

But in the context of the show. Since obsession is a huge theme of the show. This could literally be what Ji Ling becomes when he is consumed by obsession; his name is now Ji Shi (寄食)
