They are still trying to keep SML in the romance game by nerfing an important political event, they was very important to justify everybody's action down the line and they added dream sequence.

It signaled she will not trust him again in his future persuasions, solidified leads trust in each other for the big show-down and was kind of reward for ML for believing FL.
Those brothels and Xiao Ru niece proposal scenes were supposed to highlight FL feeling threatened by other woman and feeling jealous, they were supposed to highlight ML value and increasing prestige after handling the imperial examination but all of that was thrown out of bin to make room for trash SRQ.
