In late spring, in western Hunan, several days of continuous rain washed over the entire Dehang Grand Canyon, making it appear as if it had been cleansed. The mountains were verdant, the water a clear blue, and the vegetation shone with a vibrant green, every nook and cranny radiating new life.
Although it's not peak tourist season in western Hunan, tourists can still be seen everywhere, from Fenghuang Ancient Town to the surrounding areas of the capital, Jishou. Speaking with accents from all over the country, they converge, disperse, and then reunite at the Dehang Grand Canyon Scenic Area, queuing to visit Tianwen Platform. His happiest moments each day were going fishing with his classmates and friends, each with their own homemade fishing rods. Most of the houses in the village were built into the hillside, some renovated in modern styles, others retaining their original appearance. The dining table was set in a dimly lit old wooden house, its color faded, with dried corn and red chilies hanging from the eaves. Cheng Yi and three Miao women sat around the table, in the center of which was a triangular hearth, simmering a pot of cured meat hotpot. Around the square table, stir-fried pork with chili peppers, pickled radishes, pickled mustard greens, bok choy, and fried small fish and shrimp were arranged in a circle. Upon setting foot on the land of western Hunan, all of Cheng Yi's senses are awakened: bamboo forests, birdsong, insect chirps, the scent of dew mixed with earth and grass, a bowl of noodles in the morning, the smoke rising from the chimneys, and the persistently high humidity in the air. In a sense, his hometown is the sum of all these feelings; all the subtle, individual, and indescribable sensations intertwine to form the "pure" western Hunan in Cheng Yi's heart.
In late spring, in western Hunan, several days of continuous rain washed over the entire Dehang Grand Canyon, making it appear as if it had been cleansed. The mountains were verdant, the water a clear blue, and the vegetation shone with a vibrant green, every nook and cranny radiating new life.
Although it's not peak tourist season in western Hunan, tourists can still be seen everywhere, from Fenghuang Ancient Town to the surrounding areas of the capital, Jishou. Speaking with accents from all over the country, they converge, disperse, and then reunite at the Dehang Grand Canyon Scenic Area, queuing to visit Tianwen Platform. The Aizhai Bridge is a microcosm of Xiangxi's development. The perilous of Xiangxi lies in Aizhai, a place historically separated by mountains and rivers, where travel was hampered by thirteen hairpin bends. Fourteen years ago, in the spring, the Aizhai Bridge, spanning 1176 meters and standing 355 meters in the air, opened up a natural barrier, transforming a once impassable chasm into a thoroughfare. The lives of the people of Aizhai gradually unfolded from the folds of the mountains. Now, looking out from the village at the foot of the mountain, two cable towers rise from the summit, steel cables stretching in graceful arcs, and deep red steel trusses suspended in mid-air. The Aizhai Bridge, like a rainbow spanning the sky, stands majestically, exuding a sense of awe and commanding respect.
At a moment when no one noticed, a thin line dangled from the bridge, a speck of ink hanging from its end. The rope taut for a moment, then snapped back, swinging in a huge arc in the air. Someone was the first to react, "They're bungee jumping!" Indeed, as Cheng Yi said, there is still much new, fun, and undiscovered potential in western Hunan today. In his school days, he was also a playful and mischievous child. "Back then, I loved observing everything, I was full of curiosity, and I was incredibly energetic, always jumping around like I had ADHD." His home was right by the Yuan River. As soon as school was over, he'd drop his bag and run to the river to swim, play in the water, and catch small fish and shrimp, spending half the day there.
Huaihua is a city built along the river, with the Yuan River flowing through it. Whether it was the village where he lived as a child or the county town where he later moved, Cheng Yi's life was always intertwined with this river. In spring, the river is a clear, greenish-blue, like lustrous jade, but in summer, when the water rises, it turns a thick, muddy yellow. Cheng Yi loved the Yuan River no matter the season. His happiest moments each day were going fishing with his classmates and friends, each with their own homemade fishing rods. His memories are they mostly didnt catch anything, but the satisfaction and joy were so genuine that even more than 20 years later, his voice still carries a pleasant feeling when he speaks of it.
Regarding the Yuan River, Cheng Yi also vividly remembers the small boats on its waterways. "When I was little, I often saw very large ships, and of course, many small boats, those old-fashioned wooden boats, moored along the bank, swaying gently with the current." Later, Cheng Yi traveled to a larger and more distant world; cargo ships on the river and cruise ships at sea roared past him, but whenever he closed his eyes, what he remembered was still that small wooden boat swaying gently on the bank.
There are no boats on this nameless stream, and the water is far less wide than the Yuanjiang River. Only a local man in rubber boots stands fishing in the babbling water. On the opposite bank, a mother goose and her two goslings forage in the grass. Cheng Yi simply watches quietly, feeling an overwhelming sense of tenderness and belonging. "It's like going back to my childhood," he says. "This is what I lived in the old house when I was a child." Back then, there was a similar stream in front of his house, shallow and clear, where clothes and dishes were washed. The house was also an old-fashioned wooden structure, with land in front planted with rapeseed flowers, and a mountain behind where they could pick peaches. He bent down and casually picked a handful of wild grass from the stream. The grass leaves were oblong and felt rough to the touch. "This kind of grass used to grow all over the mountains when I was a child; it holds all my childhood memories."
In late spring in western Hunan, the mountains are green, the water is flowing, and the plants hidden deep in the mountains, along the streams, and in the crevices of the rocks are all busily awakening. Plantain, black nightshade, water hemp, verbena, five-leaf vine, and all kinds of fernsβyou can feel the joy. Everything is growing desperately, trying to grow strong enough before summer arrives. Plants are like this, and so are people. People in the Hunan and Hubei areas generally have a rather impatient character, a kind of "time waits for no one" spirit. Similar to the custom of eating spicy food, this is due to the geographical climate. Summers are extremely hot, and winters are extremely cold. People born and raised in such places naturally have strong personalities. Cheng Yi also has his "hurried" moments. Earlier, to avoid delaying the filming schedule, he hurried down to the stream. It had just rained that morning, and his feet were slippery. He stumbled a couple of steps, and everyone reminded him at the same time. He didn't even look up, casually saying, "It's okay, I grew up here."
Until his teens, Cheng Yi was a child nurtured by these mountains and rivers. After that, he went north to study, and a watershed moment appeared in his life. It was his first time traveling far from home, taking a train alone from Huaihua to Beijing, more than 1,700 kilometers, a considerable distance at the time. His family saw him off at the train station, and the scene before the train departed is still deeply etched in his mind: the station was full of people, noisy and bustling, his family squeezed in the middle, waving goodbye to him. Then the train hummed and pulled away, the noise instantly cut off, and loneliness welled up in his heart.
Leaving home is always like this, a mix of melancholy and hope for a new life. Cheng Yi actively threw himself into it, studying, filming, and moving between various film sets, rarely staying in one place for long. Looking back on those days, he said, "From my teens until now, I've basically been traveling everywhere for work, making the world my home. It wasn't until last year that the pace slowed down a bit. When I first entered the industry, I didn't dare to imagine so much. Sometimes I wanted to stop and rest for a while, but after a good night's sleep, I would be full of fighting spirit again. Everyone has contradictory times. Although I had the thought of slowing down and seeing how things go, time and opportunity won't wait for you. Once you choose to do something, you must do your best to do it well." These past two days, walking on the land of Xiangxi, I often encountered women and aunties in ethnic costumes selling snacks and local specialties, as well as local elderly people. They are all people who are striving for progress amidst countless changes. This is undoubtedly a fundamental aspect of Cheng Yi's character; a fire still burns within him, gently but steadily, maintaining its warmth over time.
This year, during the Spring Festival, Cheng Yi spent a few days in his hometown, truly experiencing the Lunar New Year. He hadn't been able to go home for the holidays several times, and his elders were visibly aging, the marks of time clearly etched on their bodies and movements. Cheng Yi understood this was the natural order, something no one could escape, but even knowing this, he couldn't help feeling a pang of sadness, "Time flies so fast." Over the years, he had maintained a close relationship with his family. When he was working or filming, his grandparents would call him precisely at the right time, not wanting to disturb his work. In Hunan, every family makes stir-fried pork with chili peppers, but Cheng Yi's favorite is still his mother's. It's not just a psychological reason; many people around him have tried it and find it more delicious than restaurant versions. Cheng Yi didn't plan to ask his mother for the secret to making this dishβand it seemed unnecessary. I had a bowl of noodles for breakfast, and for lunch I had local specialty stir-fried pork with chili peppers, along with free-range eggs and some stir-friesβwe Hunanese always like to stir-fry. In the evening, I ate a hot pot of cured meat with the Miao women around the fire pit. I ate seven or eight pieces of that pickled radish, and I just kept eating it." It was truly a long and unforgettable meal, because of the abundance and authenticity of the dishes, and because of the lively and engaged atmosphere among the diners.
πButterfly Village, western Hunan
The dining location was Butterfly Village in Huangcun Village, Aizhai, a Miao village with 78 households, named after the Miao totem "butterfly." Osmanthus trees and chili seedlings grew at the village entrance, and a stone-paved road meandered into the village, with a rooster strutting proudly along the road. Most of the houses in the village were built into the hillside, some renovated in modern styles, others retaining their original appearance. The dining table was set in a dimly lit old wooden house, its color faded, with dried corn and red chilies hanging from the eaves. Cheng Yi and three Miao women sat around the table, in the center of which was a triangular hearth, simmering a pot of cured meat hotpot. Around the square table, stir-fried pork with chili peppers, pickled radishes, pickled mustard greens, bok choy, and fried small fish and shrimp were arranged in a circle. Without much formality, after a few pieces of cured meat and pickled radish, the conversation became more lively. During the filming before dinner, Cheng Yi experienced a "magical" encounter: a large yellow dog suddenly appeared out of nowhere and followed him around several times.
