I finally finished this! A cute, fun, silly romp with some dark scenes here and there and a crazy villain thrown in (would have loved to see less of Seo Myeong Ju in the last few episodes); I thought all of the sweet characters were quite lovable!

Don't think too hard to make it all make sense (cause it won't on closer scrutiny 😅), and enjoy!

I just finished and gave it an 8.5. I think it's a solidly good drama made with a lot of love and care with incredible…
Emotionally manipulative in what way? What did you think the drama wanted you to feel/think?

9.4 is too much. There were many things wrong with this series. Many things. Especially how they portrayed the…
Isn't Jeju traditionally matriarchal, though? If so, this dynamic is cultural, to some extent.

I haven't seen this drama yet, but I think it'd be refreshing to see a husband serve his wife voluntarily, selflessly and sacrificially, and have it portrayed in media as beautiful; many, many wives have done it for millenia, and we've seen THAT dynamic portrayed in media a lot already. 😉 Let the hubby have a go at it!

I haven't seen this drama yet, but without even watching it, I get the impression you had a bone to pick before even starting. 😅

If this drama says that life, love and family is messy, imperfect, beautiful, life-changing and challenging, then it seemed to hit the nail on the head...

I'm not ready to cry that much! 😅 I really want to watch it with my sister, but she is currently expecting a baby boy in a few months, and I know the MC loses a son (my impression is when he's quite young?) at some point, and I think it might hit too close to home right now so I don't want to suggest it yet.

Season 2 eases you into the characters a lot more; this season just throws you in, for sure! 😅
Haha, same! Lots of pausing, rewinding, and Googling! 😅

Is this bromance
Sort of, I mean there's a lot of male friendship and loyalty and deep bonds. But it's not like "buddy" bromance, it's like friends that partner together to uphold justice because they care about the same things and want good for the empire and those they love (and those who were wronged in the past). If you watch you'll know what I mean.

Is season 2 necessary to watch? cause i only want this
No, but it's also a lovely watch! Much more about family and love than about justice/revenge.

I want to watch this on the plane so I have something to pass the time, but based on the comments I'm afraid it'll be too embarrassing--because I'll probably be a weepy mess! 😭

I've never seen drama score GO UP to a 9.2 after airing (I guess besides TW). I guess I have to watch this, and I really do miss Bo Gum!

Nirvana In Fire 2, Castaway Diva and Reply 1988 are the only dramas that have made me ugly cry while watching them, but it looks like this one might beat them! I got teary just watching clips...so, I'm done for. 😂

Wait, so you DID watch some of this, you just didn't finish it because you didn't like how they handled this plot…
I can definitely agree with you that the entertainment industry often normalizes a lot of unethical or problematic behavior.

Glad you were able to get more clarity!

This show had a steady rating from the time of airing and now, not only here but in most other platforms also…
It's been happening more and more with popular shows on MDL. I wonder if it's because MDL is getting more traffic as dramas get bigger globally. More traffic = more opinions = more trolls. 😔 It's obvious much of the negativity comes from contrarians/trolls on this page because people with reasoned criticism based on more objective faults in a drama will tend to give more constructive reviews or comments (and share their opinions with less vehemance). Some people just delight in getting everyone riled up. 😅

That said, I think this show is divisive because people go into it with the wrong expectations without carefully checking the plot, genre, and tags. They just see "high rating" and expect it to be something they'll love.

It's because most people only evaluate, they don't write reviews...
It's enjoyable! But it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you don't like fluffy rom-coms then you'll probably not enjoy it as much as many on this site seem to. It's sweet and fantastical, but not realistic, and has some weak parts in the time travel part of the writing; it didn't bother me, though, because I wasn't going into it expecting tight sci-fi writing. 😅

12th episode and i think I've seen the FL fall/tripped like 73297338 times
Haha, it wouldn't be a Kdrama rom-com without the FL tripping, though! 😂😉

Wait, so you DID watch some of this, you just didn't finish it because you didn't like how they handled this plot…
I probably deserved the jab about being among the "youth" with an "inability to comprehend what they read" since my initial question does sound passive aggressive looking back at it, and probably annoyed you; I could have worded the first part of my post less combatively--sorry about that.

To clarify, I was pushing back on your post because it seemed to indicate you had either watched the drama and gotten something very different from it than me, or, if you hadn't, you were making very strong judgments and pronouncements not only about the drama, but about people's integrity, and all based on assumptions that you had not completely verified. I think the post unnecessarily cast judgment on watchers who didn't deserve the criticism.

As for your last two questions, the FL, from what I remember, sees the ML as an adult in Episode 1. After she meets him as a "student," it took several episodes for her to find out about his real identity because he was supposed to keep his mission a secret (and the ML had no idea she had gotten initially flustered by him because he's maybe a little unobservant 😉). When he met her as his "teacher," he had to decide between telling her everything (and jeopardize the mission) or pretend he had been a student all along. He went with option two initially. When he finally realized she was on to his secret (an episode or so before she actually finds out, we hear she started to suspect he was not what he seemed), then he shares everything with her because he can't avoid it and doesn't want her to snitch. I'll admit that neither the FL or ML very accurately portray real teacher or NIS agent qualities or choices, so I would recommend you not go into watching it expecting everything to be dealt with thoughtfully and realistically as far as their jobs or roles in those jobs go. A lot of suspension of belief is necessary to watch this, but if you can do that, I think it's enjoyable. I haven't caught up with the three most recent episodes, but I hope to soon. 😏

I hope that clarifies some things for you!

I've been reading the comments and was bemused at some comments that said one does not have to watch season 2…
Do you think the low ratings for Season 2 are due to a difference in quality for the drama, acting and plot (in that it dropped), or more because people didn't like the change in cast (like an Alchemy of Souls situation: I personally attribute the lower score of Season 2 to people's expectations not being met in the way they envisioned, and the change in actors, not due to the writing or quality of the storytelling)?

I want to watch Season 2, but I'll be disappointed only if the quality is worse. Getting used to new actors would a bummer, but it won't impair my ability to enjoy the continuation of a good story (and besides, I like Dylan Wang well enough! 😏).
