I disagree since I felt they communicate many important things as a couple. He doesnt want her to join him since the mission is dangerous but they talk it out and do it together. They talks about each other so they understand each other pasts and dreams. They didnt forced each other ideals but what they did is discuss. He didnt hide anything from her once they got together and always tell her the truth despite the truth might hurt her. He knew the way to a peaceful relationship is to have good relationship with Sheng so he made efforts. He wanted to be mortal and keep asking her if she is really okay to follow him as she is a cultivator vs when she is stronger later. When they are sad, they console each other. They are one of the most communicated, mature and high EQ couples Ive seen in dramas.
Once his identity revelation and they become a couple, all they did is talk about everything. I find their relationship very well written despite its not a big part in the drama. It somehow have depth despite the limited screen time.
Thats why I said its mostly falls on the writer for the end. She could made they both decided on the decision since that is what they have been doing in the whole drama which is talk to each other.
Its a solid drama through and through but the final decision fell on the writer mostly as she also made Xin Mei went to battle to die even without telling Lu Qian Qiao. His decision at the end are forced from him since he knew all his loved ones and friends will die hasnt he made the transformation.

The best thing about being his fan is all the quality dramas we are getting from him.
But despite of that, they are so far my fav couple this year. Theyre so cute and have a relationship like a soulmate.
And Im so happy its a Happy Ending. Off to rewatch it again.
