I don't think him losing his toes is the main point. It was the moment when his dad chose to save the 1st prince first. And how they were left to die with no help coming to them. He is mad at the fact the 1st prince didn't send help back after he got away. He is mad that he felt why was his life less valuable just because he is not a prince when it was their dad that fought to gain that kingdom together. His dad's reward for saving the prince was to be sent to the northern border.
