On Takara-kun & Amagi-kun Aug 26, 2022
This show is perfect example of why I rarely rate or give up on a show after the first episode. I didn't enjoy the 1st episode, but the 2nd one was delightful. This is the season of high school BLs and some of them are really good. Takara, Amagi and Amagi's friend are all adorable and I LOVE that their story/relationship development aren't dragging. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

I remember loving this series and now I can barely stay awake while watching it. I'm always sad when a show is about to come out and I see that there are 8 or less episodes. But then I watch something like this that’s lost the good will it build as it drags to the finish and I WISH it had ended sooner.

Shin, Asuka and Sakurako are absolutely wonderful and I want all 3 of them to have happy endings. But the adults are becoming increasingly unlikeable. As others have said, the writers dropped the ball. The classroom confession was just another example of the writers not doing right by their characters. Smh!

I think I am beginning to understand why UN appeals to the romantic in me so much. It's because Kim is such a…
I'm not sure if you're joking, but you just summed up one of the biggest problems with the series and others like it. Kim is a gay man and gay men aren't stand ins for women and shouldn't be depicted as stereotypical female characters. BL has always had elements of wish fulfillment for mostly straight female audiences. But at its best it tells stories of gay men, a group that is marginalized in the real world. And prior to the popularity of BL, they often didn't have their stories told in Asian shows/movies.

Also, if the writer made this story with an actress as Kim, I'm sure many people would call out how toxic and harmful the relationship between Kim and Kamol is. Putting a man in the role doesn't make the relationship dynamics romantic, but it does help normalize such relationships in BL.

I'm not trying to attack you or say that you shouldn't enjoy the series. But representation matters and gay men shouldn't be depicted as outdated female characters to make mostly female audiences happy. They deserve better.

This never gets better, but I look forward to it every week. Laugh out loud sex scenes that couldn't be less sexy, random hook ups, "bdsm" that's anything but, geez it's all so wrong and yet I can't bring myself to stop watching.

P.S. Nothing about this series is praiseworthy, but I appreciate that some BLs are finally embracing the fact that men have body hair. Perfectly shaven men rarely exist IRL and it's nice to see more BLs showing a tiny bit of realness.

Title What If
This show feels like it came out of nowhere and I'm not complaining. The plot is simple, as far as I can tell the actors are amateurs, but it works. The production quality is much higher than you see in most lower-budget BLs and that was nice to see. I'm a bit confused about the lack of promotion for the series, hopefully they make some effort in that aspect. The first episode was better than the second, but I'm looking forward to this short and sweet series.

The mother is quite an exhausting character but I think that's the whole point. How she is extremely possessive…
I feel the same way.

I agree with you completely. She was written like that for a reason and she is a VERY believable mother character for all the reasons you said. Someone like her would definitely center themselves/ their perspectives in every situation. And there is a worthwhile story that focuses on her growth or lack of growth as a woman and mother. But I personally don't want to see it.

Wang and In are sooooo incredible together that every second with her feels like a waste of time for me. I'm not criticizing the show at all though. It's awesome so far and I know that even if she keeps being in every scene it still has the potential to be a great series.

Another show that adhered perfectly to the predictable Thai BL template has ended. Shallow juvenile relationships between MCs, side characters that were better than leads, too much product placement, obsessive BL fans at the school, middle episodes that dragged, a rushed ending and a great OST by Jeff Satur. This show had it all. And it will quickly be forgotten like so many other BLs made in recent years that also followed the template.

I hope Daniel and Bew and Boat and Kenji get leading roles soon. Those 4 were easily the actors in this series.

I always look forward to stories that aren't made for mass audiences and when a company gives a director the artistic freedom to make what they want. I didn't love the director's previous series. But this is getting better every week.

I usually love JBLs because of the way the stories are told and because the characters have so much depth and relatability.

But I didn't like the first episode. The scenes were really short like a bunch of commercials put together to fill 25 minutes and lacked narrative structure. So I felt no connection to any of the characters. I knew what was going on the whole time, but I never cared. I'm fine with non-linear stories but here it felt like an unnecessary gimmick.

But I'll be back next week hoping to enjoy it more.

I gave up on Check Out after episode 2 so I can't say much about it. Chahub is absolutely gorgeous, but I've yet to see him be good in a series. IMO the acting in both series is mostly bad and the scripts are both awful.

Isn't that just SOTUS S (well, with less characters but still)?
I won't say much since you and reefpicker already had a convo about how BL is evolving beyond college. While I agree that Thai BLs have often focused on college, I've seen that over the last few years they are expanding. And I think that in large part because the teen and young adult audiences want variety. And we all deserve it.

The reason I suggested a story with these characters outside of college is because I really like the dynamics they've created for the characters and their relationships. But I'm also very aware that this show is not very memorable and that it's no better than the vast majority of Thai college BLs that have come out in the last 5 years. I love BL and I'd love to see the genre keep evolving and tell a variety of stories about gay men. Instead of just churning out the same stories with a revolving door of young actors who will be discarded once the next hot young guy gets his big break.

I am absolutely loving this series. This feels like this is the season of high school BLs and this is by far my favorite. I feel like I'm a student at the school as I watch everything unfold. The characters are all so well written, the mystery around the curse isn't taking up too much of the plot and the relationships are very believable. Akk, Khan and Wat are great as the leaders of the school the 3 actors have wonderful chemistry together. The BL elements also work Thua/Khan and Ayan/Akk don't feel forced or out of place in the larger plot. And the pacing feels perfect. I can't wait to see the next episode. I'm so glad this show exists.

There was so much to love in the first episode from the cinematography, to the sound editing, the locations and especially every single moment that In and Wang were on camera together. The calming peacefulness of it all made the beginning of the story feel like a prelude to a very special romance that I can't wait to watch unfold. The looks they exchanged, the silences, the coy smiles all made me feel like they were casting a spell on each other and the audience.

Sadly for me, there was another element to the episode that distracted me from all that I loved. Sasiwimol was A LOT. It's hard to remember one minute that she wasn't on camera, talking and eating up the scene. I've seen way too many BLs, but I haven't ever watched one and wished the mom was the main character. This has so much potential to be great, but that will only be possible with less of her.

Probably because the script is sticking to the novel. The novel is quite popular so at least the story itself…
A reminder that the biggest problem with Thai BLs are the plots. Companies keep making these badly written stories and then are surprised when fans don't like them. SMH. But honestly, the story wouldn't be good without Cherry, but it would be better. Has there ever been a BL where fans begged for an irritating obsessive woman character? I can't think of a time when that happened. Why even add her?

The majority of the series before the most recent episode was a spin on SOTUS. There's no story that hasn't been made before. But Thai BLs focus on college, A LOT. I think it would be nice to focus on young adults out of college which rarely happens in these shows.

So disappointing. With 4 episodes left, I feel like things won't be happy until the very end. Shin is pretty much the best guy ever, I'm not sure anyone is good enough for him! I just want him to be happy 😢

Wow, I didn't even know there was a novel. It makes much more sense now. I also prefer Kim over Kamol. I'm only able to get through the episodes by skipping over the silly mob drama and scenes with Cherry. The actress is fine but she always gets awful roles.

Lol at least people are entertained. But I think we are laughing at the series instead of laughing with the series and for me it's just a reminder that the writer/director have not done a good job.
