Come for the Rebirth Plot, Stay for the Kisses

I really like the reborn-in-an-ancient-setting type of storyline with a lot of palace intrigue and plotting, but despite being only 8 episodes long, the story could've still been presented with a tighter narrative. I loved the first 2–3 episodes a lot, but somewhere towards the last third, the story became too much about the same planning and plotting, which lacked any excitement and was pretty predictable. The palace drama and the rebellion could've been done so much better, with more twists and turns happening or something — idk, it felt kinda bland to me.

The 2 CPs were fun to watch because of their contrasting "romances," if you can even call it that for the second CP lol. The guy who played the crown prince was so fun to watch, but I would've loved to know more about his backstory and his budding relationship with Ziming to understand him better.

I think the biggest complaint I had was the characterization of Pei Yanzhi. Like, it made him look so weak, stupid, and one-dimensional. In the past, Yanzhi thought he had planned it all to save himself and Yin Qi, but they all died. The bad guys didn't even do any extra maneuvering; they were just following bad-guy logic and very easily eliminated the emperor and the two leads. Why couldn't they make Yanzhi smart enough to somehow foresee that, and still have the lovers end up with a bad fate to set up the rebirth plot? I mean, all along, I could never trust Yanzhi's instincts and plans because he just looked so naive and underprepared.

I mean, they could've constructed the story better where Yanzhi was either completely blindsided in the past life, but we still could've been like, "Yeah, he couldn't have foreseen that." And then in the new one, with Yin Qi being so insistent on him failing, he could've actually thought about it and upgraded his plan somehow, thinking that Yin Qi might have a reason to think so, so let me put in more effort or something.

Yin Qi utilized his rebirth knowledge well and outsmarted the crown prince many times, so that was nice to watch.

The kisses and NC scenes were pretty good for both the CPs. I actually liked that the main CP had that one big NC scene, which felt enough and satisfying, and the show, in general, was littered with so many kisses that it kept me happy!

The overall show was nice to watch and definitely happy to see another ancient cbl and hoping for more to come. Easy watch on the weekend, I dont think it'll consume your mind or anything but good enough to occupy an empty Sunday :)
