He is explosive, and it is abusive in the beginning. She isn't taking it all the time. She stands up and speaks out. He has softened and apologized when he never would before to anyone. He does listen to her when she tells him not to treat her that way. His pain is deep and he doesn't have the tools to navigate his feelings or a trusted space to be open. He is trying, he is changing as he opens up to let her in his world, he is healing. There are no perfect people in the world. He is working on it. There has been growth. The competition period is a 3-month time frame. It's not like we are looking at years here. Healing is a process.
As far as he knows, LKS is in love with her 10-year crush, she isn't even thinking about him, he isn't seriously considering her he is her mentor, he doesn't want to be with anyone. We do see him change a bit today when he finds out she has moved on.
Personally, I believe part of his thing with Elise was to find out if she was involved in the essential oil . He had several strange interactions which looked like he was playing her to find out or using her to help LKS win. HOWEVER... He could have felt guilty if he thought they slept together, so he asked her to date, he messed up. That reason never sat well with me based on the way he spoke and his glances at certain moments. In 24-25...when she agreed to the relationship, his reply was "sure" with his back to her. It was lifeless. "Do you want pizza for dinner?" "Sure" I don't care if we eat cardboard. He is detached. It could also be that he is resigned to the fact there is no one left in his life, everyone has left. Remember... LKS is gone, she moved out. He will try to get her back but that is not official. Overall, I don't think this portion of the story is well written or explained well. He isn't interested in Elise as a romantic partner that is clear.

JQF and LSK will get together, but the "dating relationship" between them isn't formed until the later part of the drama, they have a mentor-mentee relationship which grows into more through various challenges.

Romance isn't always physical. It's in the way people grow together as much as how they grow as people because of one another. The relationship is more natural love. The romance is in the kindness, the sweet moments, glances, sincere care, concern, protection, and forgiveness. Plus the storyline has only covered about 2-3 months. She had to fall out of love, he is grieving and wrestling with the death of his taste buds, the death of his mentor, the betrayal of someone near him. This is pretty normal for a 40 part drama to take a slow approach.
