As much as I hate to say this, Kuji's character has been portrayed as somewhat cold in the live adaptation. Sure, he was quite aloof in the manga too but his actions more than made up for it. And as for their relationship, it's the best example of 'undefined'. They aren't exactly friends and they aren't dating either but they hook up and both seem to care about e/o. Azuma even clearly stated that he likes the "comfortable distance and comfortable relationship" which leads me to think that they actually prefer the slight detachment between them but then he also said that he wanted to be together with Kuji. Now considering the context of the latter statement, it could also be because he has been met with a harsh realisation after Tajimi-san's passing that the people around him might not be there for very long. He values Kuji as a companion and fears that someday he might lose him too.
As for Kuji, the manga gave me the impression that Kuji had been in love with/ had feelings for Azuma long before they met again (even before Kuji left his job) but his portrayal in the live adaptation has me confused.
