Hope, growth and football

Some dramas entertain you. Some quietly become part of your story. Road to Success was the latter.

I almost didn't start this drama because I wasn't ready to move on from Speed and Love. Ironically, another Esther Yu drama was exactly what I needed. What I expected was a football romance. What I got was a heartfelt story about growth.

As a football mom whose daughter recently made varsity, this drama arrived at the perfect time. Or maybe that's why I started it in the first place. I never imagined I'd be enjoying the football matches and learning about tactics.

Another unexpected highlight for me was the psychology woven throughout the story. This drama sparked a curiosity in me that made me reflect on human behavior, resilience, relationships, and personal growth. It added a layer of depth that made the story even more meaningful.

The romance was sweet, natural and mature. Esther Yu and Chen Jingke had wonderful chemistry. I've seen Chen Jingke in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love and loved his character there too. My only wish was for just one more episode of them simply being together after everything they went through. But I understand why the story ended the way it did. The last episode was heartwarming, well written and full of sincerity.

Esther Yu once again reminded me why she's becoming one of my favorite actresses. After loving her in Speed and Love and Love Between Fairy and Devil, I was surprised that I connected with a completely different character just as much. She brings warmth, sincerity, and an effortless charm that makes her characters feel real. How the bestfriend described Wanxing was spot on.

More than the romance, what stayed with me was the message. This drama isn't about becoming perfect. It's about becoming better, through teammates, family, mentors, friendship, and love. It celebrates resilience, trust, teamwork, and believing in people even when they struggle to believe in themselves.

I also realized something about my own taste in C-dramas. I thought my favorite genre was romance.
It isn't. My favorite stories are about capable, warm people growing together.. and Road to Success was exactly that.

Sun and moon shining together

Speed and Love is one of the C-dramas I always find myself rewatching. I know it's one of those dramas people either love or hate, but for me, it was an easy 10/10.

The biggest reason? The chemistry between Zhao Zhao and Mu Mu. It was absolutely insane. Every scene together felt effortless, whether they were teasing each other, arguing, missing each other, or simply exchanging a look. I just couldn't get enough of them.

He Yu was perfect as Zhao Zhao. He has that bad-boy look, but then he smiles and suddenly he's the most charming person on screen. What made me love him even more was how patient and gentle he was with Mu Mu. He believed in her, respected her, and gave her the space to grow.

And Mu Mu... yes, she was younger, but she was never weak. She was smart, brave, and capable from the very beginning. I especially loved the Nanjing arc because it showed how much she had grown and how devoted she was to Zhao Zhao. I've rewatched those episodes more times than I can count.

I know Esther Yu's voice isn't for everyone, but it never bothered me. If anything, I thought she was perfect as Mu Mu and brought so much charm and energy to the role.

As someone who's a fan of the Fast & Furious movies, I thought the racing scenes were so fresh and exhilarating. They weren't just there for show, they actually made me excited for every race. One of my favorite moments was when Mu Mu surprised Jin Zhao with her drifting. I remember smiling the entire time because it was such a badass moment.

By the time Zhao Zhao and Mu Mu finally found their way back to each other, it felt incredibly satisfying because they had both grown so much. Their reunion felt earned, making the ending even more rewarding.

I've watched Speed and Love three times already, and somehow I still end up replaying the Nanjing arc and all my favorite scenes. That's how I know it's one of my all-time favorites. No matter how many new dramas I watch, I'll always find myself coming back to Zhao Zhao, Mu Mu, and their unforgettable chemistry.

Came for He Yu

I went into Blossom of Power mainly because of He Yu, and honestly, He Yu alone was worth the watch. He was adorable, playful, sincere, and then suddenly dangerous when the situation called for it. His expressions and eyes continue to be one of my favorite things about him, and I loved watching his character fall so completely in love with the Crown Princess. He Yu is easily my 100000/10 for this drama.

The romance took a while to win me over. I found the Crown Princess too cold and couldn't initially understand why so many princes were falling for her, especially the Crown Prince who seemed completely smitten almost immediately. I personally prefer female leads who are brighter, more expressive, charming and playful, so Meng Ziyi's restrained portrayal wasn't immediately my cup of tea.

But as the story progressed, I came to understand that her coldness was actually an important part of the character. When the other characters noticed that the Crown Princess was smiling more, I realized, yes, me too! Her gradual acceptance of the Crown Prince's sincerity and her eventual ability to let her guard down made much more sense to me.

Ironically, the character also made me reflect on myself. I'm not naturally very affectionate either, and watching her made me realize how easily being reserved can be perceived as coldness, even when there is love underneath. So unexpectedly, the drama gave me a little personal wake-up call.

Episode 32 absolutely broke me. I knew from the beginning that this was supposed to have a happy ending, but that didn't make the heartbreak any easier. The dream sequence where she believed the Crown Prince was still alive had me crying. I had to finish the drama that night because there was no way I was going to sleep without knowing that it would end happily. I may or may not have watched Episode 35 at 2x speed because I desperately needed the reunion.

My biggest complaint is the ending. Episode 36 felt rushed, especially the lack of an explanation for how the Crown Prince came back. I appreciated the epilogue, though. Those extra moments were exactly what I needed after all that emotional trauma.

Overall, I enjoyed the drama and especially appreciated the themes of trust, sincerity, resilience, love and learning to open yourself up to someone. The chemistry between the leads worked for me, although it wasn't quite at the level of my favorite C-drama couples. Overall rating 8.8/10

Comfort drama

Love in the Clouds is my comfort drama. I've honestly lost count of how many times I've rewatched it. Whenever I want something that makes me smile, this is the one I go back to.
I almost didn't watch it because the plot didn't immediately grab me. Looking back, I'm so glad I gave it a chance because it became one of my all-time favorites, and surprisingly, it was the drama that finally helped me move on from my Pursuit of Jade obsession.

The biggest reason is Ji Bozai and my girl, Ming Yi. Their chemistry is absolutely insane. They don't even have to say anything. The way they look at each other, tease each other, protect each other... every interaction just feels natural. They're one of those couples you can't help but root for.
From the wedding onwards, the drama became even more addictive for me. There were so many memorable scenes that I still love rewatching. And when Ji Bozai finally realized that Ming Yi was actually Ming Xian... what a satisfying payoff. All the longing, the misunderstandings, and the emotions built up to that moment so perfectly.
This drama also made me a huge Lu Yuxiao fan. I first fell in love with her in Love Between Lines, and after watching three of her dramas, she's become my favorite Chinese actress. She has this effortless charm that makes every character feel lovable and real. Ming Yi was strong, witty, capable, and never boring to watch.
At the end of the day, Love in the Clouds isn't just one of my favorite dramas, it's the one I return to when I want to feel happy. It's comforting, heartwarming, and full of moments that never get old no matter how many times I replay them. And somehow, every rewatch still makes me fall in love with Ji Bozai and Ming Yi all over again

Took a while to get into but loved it overall

I am a huge Park Hyung sik fan and I've seen SWDBS probably 100 times, which led me to Hwarang and The Heirs. I loved the American version of Suits and got so excited the PHS would be playing Mike Ross's character.

Acting was top notch! PHS, JDG and the other actors (except for Ji-Na) do not dissapoint. PHS's acting was so different from SWDBS but so fitting and believable. I must admit though that it took me so many tries and dropped it so many times because it was a bit boring at the start. I tried it again since it's now on Netflix, while on lockdown and guess what, I enjoyed it! I call them my officemates. Oh boy I miss going to the office and dressing up in business attire.. but I digress

The story is similar to the American version so the cases are familiar. I also got annoyed at the start at how GYW made all those mistakes but it did tie up towards the end. The changes that the Korean version made were fitting for the story that they were trying to tell.

Don't count on a love story because there was zero chemistry between YW and Jina haha. But that's fine because I came from the bromance and there was definitely chemistry between Atty Choi and YW. Similar to the Harvey Mike tandem that I loved.

Overall, i enjoyed this series. I loved seeing PHS in a suit and all his facial expressions. I cried towards the end and the ending was satisfying. Must watch!

Never-Ending Summer — 10/10

I didn't expect Never-Ending Summer to become a 10/10 for me.

I usually gravitate toward easygoing, comforting C-dramas, so at first I wasn't sure what to make of this one. It had plenty of melodrama, complicated families, misunderstandings, and "villians" that gave me plenty to complain about. But somewhere along the way, I stopped caring about the messiness and realized how deeply invested I had become in Lu Xixiao and Zhou Wan.

And that's what made this drama work for me.

I believed them.

I believed their attraction, their banter, their stubbornness, and ultimately their love. Zhou Wan was cute and feminine but also strong, smart, straightforward, and able to hold her own against LXX. I loved that she could tease him, challenge him, and pursue him without losing her softness.

And LXX... I really loved this character. He had that bad-boy quality that made it easy to understand why ZW had a crush on him, but what got me was the tenderness underneath it. Especially the way his voice softened when he spoke to Zhou Wan. You could hear how much he loved her.

Then came the breakup episode.

The “As long as you say you love me, I'll forgive you for everything” scene and the fireworks scene absolutely broke my heart. LXX dancing while imagining ZW with the fireworks in the background was one of those scenes that stays with you. He was physically alone, but emotionally she was still right there with him. And the OST made it even more painful. Sunburn playing in my Spotify CDrama playlist brings me back to that heartbreaking scene.

But what ultimately pushed this from a 9 to a 10/10 was the ending.

The finale was so satisfying.

ZW's proposal was exactly what LXX deserved. After everything he had gone through, I needed to hear her finally say those things—to hear her acknowledge her feelings and choose him openly. It felt like the emotional reassurance he had been waiting for all along.

And then LXX's proposal was equally sweet.

And then the interview ending.

That was the icing on the cake. The final revelation that ZW had actually liked LXX since 2013 also made me understand her much better. Her feelings weren't something that suddenly appeared in 2016. There had been a genuine crush underneath everything else, and that made so much of her behavior click into place for me.

I actually rewatched the last episode on the same day because I loved it so much. I didn't want to immediately move on to another drama. I wanted to sit with this one for a while and appreciate it.

Finally, I'd like to acknowledge Daniel Zhou and Bao Shang En for their excellent portrayal of Lu Xi Xiao and Zhou Wan. Their acting, chemistry, and understanding of their characters made their relationship feel believable and genuine. They really brought these two characters to life, and I can't imagine this story working as well without them.

That's ultimately why it's a 10/10.

Not because it was perfect. It wasn't. I complained about plenty of things. But I felt this drama. I cared about these characters. I understood them even when I disagreed with them. I hurt when they hurt, and I was genuinely happy when they finally found their way back to each other.

Was it messy? Absolutely.
Did I complain? Constantly.
Did it emotionally damage me? Yes.
Did I enjoy watching it? Also yes.

And after all of that, it gave me an ending that actually made me happy.

A very satisfying, very heartfelt 10/10. ❤️
