If you want to make a love triangle drama convincing, the second lead needs to be appealing too. If one of the triangle is played by someone unattractive, no-one would believe in it.

I'm sure the actor was perfectly happy to take the role of second lead. No-one can play the first lead in every single drama they act in. It's a tribute to the actor if they are able to play the main lead, second lead, villain, hero or minor part equally well.

You know, I think it probably *was* meant to be funny in a way. This writer does like using the usual tropes in a mocking, "look, audience, isn't this silly?" way.

Even if it was an accident, he didn't exactly dive in to save him either. He seem to be the sort of person who conveniently twists events to fit his needs. Brother falls overboard. Oh well. That suits him.
