the ending in the novel is much much different. but still not as dark as people say it is, in the novel he doesn't kill the emperor but he allows the emperor's sister to make that decision because the emperor told her to kill herself when she asked for help when she was the hostage bride, so she killed the emperor. And XW gave the emperor the option of either him killing his mom or getting killed, so clearly the emperor killed his mom. But XW and ninger still ended up getting married and retired in the novel. The emperor was also darker in the novel which excuses why XW gave him that option in the end.
Lets not forget though, in the 1st episode of the drama, XW had murdered a lot of people which is emphasized on EP 31 that she has the memory of her trying to seduce him, and he has the red ink, that basically decides who lives and dies. And i don't know if people noticed, but it seemed that she was able to change everything by just taming him basically, in the drama especially

Also reminder, Dong fang Cing cang was also darker in the novel but they made him softer in the LBFD

can you look at the hole picture rather than just one moment? The guy risked his life to safe hers without wanting anything in return, how many times?????? an emotional set back is forgivable, especially for the flawed character that this anti hero is. Reminder, ANTIHERO, very flawed character, but equally redeeming due to his continues sacrifices for the FL and the people he cares for the most. That's the point of the whole damm show!
