It's explained in Ep 8 at the restaurant. He and the guy (sorry forgot his name) he was chasing got hit by a van. The guy saved the detectives life by shielding the brunt of the impact. The guy then gives the detective his glasses, signifying the detective taking his role as some ghost hunter of some sorts (that part was actually pretty vague).
