The final second of the series reminds me of the ending of Princess Agent... in that the female lead has a resurgence and opens her eyes.
I am a bit let down by the ending as i was really hoping for a picture perfect ending... but that's just not possible especially when the title of the drama is "The first encounter and the last parting." It's so revealing that it was not going to be a fairy tale ending. However, i have been so entertained by this series... a Christmas gift from c drama land.
My two cents in this "Whodunnit" series... i think the mastermind is Chief Li. My suspicion is based on the fact that in the casting list, he is ranked 6th!! He probably plays a pretty big part that is not yet revealed. (currently on episode 28)

Arrogant and insolent and possesses very little self awareness. I'm disappointed that she demands that the ml trust her when she keeps such big lies from him. Gosh, make up your mind woman. If you love him then devote yourself, if you don't like him then go away. Such a she-jerk!!
