Chemistry isn't overrated and it helps with deeper investment into character relationships - romantic, platonic, or antagonistic, and for some like myself, it enhances the overall themes of the show. Just because it's not the same for you, doesn't make it "overrated." That's probs because FX isn't his legitimate or bio son so keeping him with his grandmother was the best means to protect him. Not to mention, he was given the best tutor from the Overwatch Council. For CPP and the Emperor, FX is a pawn, they both love him but he's a means to gain something. Fan Jian at least protects and treat him as a person first. Besides, he always stands on business whenever he needs to.

Right, there's plenty of other costume dramas with a focus on romance. I like the political aspect of historical but I love that this also focuses on interconnected relationships and friendships.
Fan Jian is my favourite of Fan Xian's father figures. Why is everyone looking for romance? Did yall watch season 1? We only got a hint of romance and we were happy with that.
