The way the King keeps on killing anyone that talks against him or his ability as the king shows that he has a deep inferiority complex & has no rational thinking. All he care about is just his throne.

According to the Shaman, Nokdu was supposed to become the king before his father if he was born on Nov 19 which he did. And Gwanghae's father (The King before him) also never wanted him to become a king so basically Gwanghae doesn't trust anyone when it comes to the throne.
