A Portrait of a Fractured Ruler, The Cost of the Crown

This is not a love story but a historical account of a ruthless emperor whose personal life is humanized, revealing his vulnerabilities and fractured mental health, which affect his relationships with those closest to him. It is a serious and deeply layered drama that does not sensationalize difficult content or use it provocatively for views. Instead, it presents a harsh yet complex and honest story about flawed people. For those seeking happy endings, this drama is not for you. However, I think it's worth a watch.

A Drama I Learned to Love, I Came for Fengjiu and Stayed for Bai Qian

Funny enough, I watched Eternal Love of Dream first because the story between Dong Hua and Bai Fengjiu resonated with me more. And I have to admit, it took me a few tries to get into Eternal Love, and even to this day, I can only watch about half of it. The early to middle parts didn’t speak to me as much, and I skipped around quite a bit until Bai Qian returns from her love tribulation. From that point on, I watched the drama in full without skipping—and genuinely loved it. It was then that the storyline became more compelling for me because of the dynamics between the leads and the way their relationship evolved as gods, learning from past mistakes and slowly uncovering their shared history. Their growth, mutual dependency, and the gradual emergence of love were beautiful to witness. The sacrifices they made, the deepening understanding of each other, and the sense of fated belonging all left a strong impression on me.

It’s definitely something I would watch again—but again, only from the middle.

Flawed Execution, but Interesting Plots

This drama has significant execution issues, and the ending fell short for me. However, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it to those who don't mind watching imperfect dramas, as the storyline is worth overlooking the flaws. The narrative itself is engrossing and, for me, unique, making it easy to become absorbed in the story. I also enjoyed the character development and dynamics. It was interesting to watch how the lead was torn between love interests, with their histories equally well-founded. It also includes political intrigue, adding depth to the narrative, while its fantastical elements offer a fresh and unique twist to the storyline.

Fox Demons + Luo Yunxi = An Easy Win for Me

I loved this—I really did. It is underproduced and has some execution and cinematography issues, likely due to limited funding. But I still loved it. I thought the narrative was unique, and I really enjoyed how the plot developed. If you know me, you know my weaknesses are fox demons (we have three of them!) and Luo Yunxi—so this was incredibly enjoyable for me. Some of the fantastical elements were a bit far-fetched, so you have to take them with a grain of salt. Still, I don’t think that detracted from the main narrative, which was often touching, especially as you learn the foxes’ backstories and watch how they come to terms with their pasts in the current lifetime. The ending may not be for everyone, but I didn’t hate it—and I could definitely see myself watching this again.

A Fantasy World Worth Exploring: A Memorable First Visit to Novoland

This drama was a bunch of firsts for me. It was the first one I watched featuring Guan Xiaotong, Zhang Ruoyun, and Chen Ruoxuan. It was also the first time I saw Ju Jingyi—before I even knew who she was. Most notably, it was my introduction to the Novoland universe.

Novoland is a fictional world, somewhat akin to Tolkien's universe for those more familiar with that reference. Multiple dramas take place within the Novoland realm, often sharing similar communities, creatures, and timelines. Some are direct sequels, while others are standalone stories. In addition to dramas, Novoland also includes full-length films that connect to or expand upon its series. It's an expansive world for anyone interested in diving deeper into its lore. With that said, I greatly enjoyed this drama. The narrative and subplots kept me engaged, and I was drawn in by both the characters and the richly imagined settings. The performances were strong, and the series was quite manageable at 28 episodes, each around 30 minutes. My only critique is the ending—it’s a bit confusing because there are two of them. However, the sequel helps clarify things.

An Enjoyable Return to Tiffany Tang's Earlier Roles

This drama has every hallmark of a dated series: heavy love triangles, petty second leads, palace conspiracies, misunderstandings, and an extensive episode count. However, I enjoyed watching it when I did—in 2021. It showcases Tiffany Tang's earlier work, which is nice to revisit, especially since she remains relevant today. The narrative and subplots are engaging, and I personally loved the ending (though it may not appeal to everyone).

More Emotional Than I Expected

I really enjoyed this. I went in knowing nothing, and I am glad I gave it a try watch. I thought the performers did a really good job, and I liked their roles. Even though some of the villains were predictable, their arcs still had interesting trajectories—adding conflict where it fit and leading to an unexpected, tragic resolution. I have to admit I felt sad near the end, as I reflected on their overall struggles and sacrifices. Overall, I’d rate this one decently high-ish.

A Raw Exploration of Identity and Connection

I really enjoyed this. It had the same tone as my favorite movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. While the narrative was different, it carried similar flashback elements and emotional character connections. The male and female leads also shared similar character arcs and growth, and the way they interacted with others echoed that film as well. So, of course, I naturally gravitated toward this feature.

Even with those parallels, it delivered a raw and emotional story in its own unique way. As it explored themes of self-identity and the meaning of life, we watched two vulnerable people find each other — all while battling self-sabotaging behaviors. I really appreciated the philosophical moments and how real and honest they felt. I also loved the characters themselves; they came across as believable, approachable, and sincere. There were parts near the end that didn’t fully fit the tone of the film, but it wasn’t a big issue. I understood the metaphors those scenes were aiming for, and the remainder of the film recaptured the emotional depth I’d felt earlier. That said, I do think the ending could have been more powerful if it had ended a few minutes earlier — leaving things on a note of healing and self-growth. Then again, that kind of ending might have disappointed viewers who prefer resolutions that follow more conventional romantic expectations.

A Romance-Comedy That Turns Deeply Poignant

This is one of my top-shelf watches, and I think it would appeal to many viewers due to its depth. Its scope makes it versatile and a great fit for a wide range of people who seek out specific themes in films. There's romance, comedy, and then—surprisingly—a turn of events that shifts the narrative into a poignant and tragic storyline. I was sold on so many levels, and I can't recommend it enough. It's well worth the time investment, and I’d be genuinely surprised if someone didn’t enjoy it.

Raw, Emotional, and Unforgettable

This was the best watch for me, but its haunting content and tone may not be for everyone. It is a story with heavy situations and personal accounts of unintentional consequences, self-reflection, and atonement. It is highly thrilling and biting—I could feel the intensity in every sequence, in the dialogue, and in the interactions. The entire time, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop as the story evolved. It was also extremely poignant, with the monologue and flashbacks revealing the protagonist's backstory and the interconnections between characters—showing how each person impacted the other. It's a true investment of pathos, and I can't recommend it enough for those who get lost in stories that are raw with feeling and humanity.

A Fantastical Mystery that Falls Flat at the Finish

This was okay. I love Huang Xuan, so I don’t regret the time I spent finishing it. The drama is well executed, with fantastical layers that gradually peel back to reveal a series of crimes involving a demon cat—leading to the heart of a mystery that began 30 years before the events of the film. The cinematography features beautiful scenes and poetic moments, but the big reveal felt underwhelming to me. The story builds so much tension that the anticlimax and resolution didn’t quite land for me. Still, I would recommend it. It’s an entertaining and quick watch, with an excellent main and supporting cast who deliver a narrative engaging enough for the time you spend with it.

An Extremely Entertaining Fantasy Romance

I can't praise this enough—it was such a fun and engaging movie, filled with comedic characters and situations, while also delivering an endearing couple with a romance that isn’t cheesy. I loved the plot, the film’s execution, the settings, and the costumes. I enjoyed every aspect of the storyline, even forgetting it was about fantastical creatures because I was so immersed.

A Mythical Martial Arts Adventure

This was an enjoyable and unexpectedly delightful watch. I stumbled upon it by chance while browsing Viki Rakuten for something with mythical elements. I immediately recognized He Landou from A Journey to Love—she’s wonderful on screen and did her role justice. Cheng Tao from Moonlight Mystique was also a pleasant surprise in the cast, bringing to life a fun, comical character.

It’s a solid choice for fans of fantasy and martial arts. However, the story did waver a bit toward the end, where the conflicts and resolutions felt somewhat flat. I’m not sure if I expected more, or if the conclusion simply didn’t live up to the strong buildup in the earlier parts. It’s something to keep in mind, but overall, it's much easier to watch a less than perfect feature in a movie format than committing to a 40-episode drama.

A Comedic Republic-Era Time Loop Romance

This is one of my favorite movies of the year. It's a romantic comedy set during the Republic Era. The entire film is structured around a time-loop continuum, with each reset revealing new information and backstory as the protagonist tries to change events or learn from them. The narrative is neither sleepy nor repetitive, and I’m glad I stumbled upon it. While I wasn’t familiar with most of the cast, I found them dynamic and felt they truly brought their characters to life.

A Well-Constructed Folklore Thriller

I enjoyed this watch. It is a strong thriller centered around a seemingly mystical mystery rooted in folklore and local tradition. The storytelling was engaging, with a well-paced buildup and a satisfying ending. The plot wasn't stilted or predictable, and it unfolded dynamically through multiple perspectives that all tied back to the central narrative. This added depth and allowed viewers to piece together different versions of the same story in search of the truth. I recommend it.
