Misleading Billing, Still a Strong Watch
This is a good watch—but if you're drawn to it because of Han Dong, be aware that he’s not listed accurately. Although he's shown as part of the main cast, he only has a guest role. He was the main reason I started watching, but I’m not disappointed, as the storyline turned out to be genuinely engaging. The narrative includes elements of mystery and thriller, continuing from a plot line introduced in the first installment. That said, you don’t need to have seen the original movie to understand or enjoy this one. The story centers on a strong lead who seeks answers and ultimately comes to terms with her past. Both the conflict and the resolution are tragic and poignant, and the conclusion was satisfying.

A Layered VR Mystery
This is an intriguing virtual reality sci-fi. The premise is compelling, and I really enjoyed the visualizations of the digital world where most of the story takes place. I also became attached to several of the characters, finding them fun, endearing, powerful, or tragic. I appreciated the layered storyline, which centers around a virtual reality game and the assassination of its designer, gradually unfolding to reveal the central conflict as the protagonists uncover the truth about their world and seek to correct past mistakes. Was this review helpful to you?
A Solid Blend of Crime and Folklore
I really enjoyed this watch. It wasn't what I was expecting, and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a thriller-investigative film that blends folklore with modern crime, blurring the lines between reality and the contemporary world as detectives work on cases that incorporate rural beliefs. I thought it opened strong and maintained a good pace as we navigated through misleading clues, with the detectives gradually narrowing down the truth. I would recommend this to fans of Han Dong and crime thrillersWas this review helpful to you?
A Haunting Paper Bride Tale
I enjoy everything related to paper brides and the tradition of making paper dolls as depicted in film. I love the eerie, thriller-like atmosphere in these stories and how they tie spiritual beliefs and customs into the narrative. So, I greatly enjoyed this watch. Even though I knew going in that there would be a realistic explanation behind the opening conflict and events, the storyline didn’t lose its spooky appeal and remained highly engaging. The execution was also somewhat poetic and poignant at times, which really resonated with me, and the conflict resolution was satisfying. I think this is a solid watch that can appeal to a broad audience. Was this review helpful to you?
A Dark and Atmospheric Experience: Quietly Disturbing
I wouldn’t categorize this as horror, but it definitely falls into the psychological, eerie, and thriller-esque realm — and I loved it. The color palette is both dreary and dreamy, perfectly complementing the narrative. The plots are engaging and intricate. Although I figured out the twist halfway through, it didn’t ruin the experience or make the rest of the story feel drawn out. There were still enough unanswered questions to keep me fully engaged. It’s a poignant story that also serves as a social commentary on cultural practices. I wholeheartedly recommend it if you're into eerie mysteries or deceptive supernatural storylines. Was this review helpful to you?
Winged Clans & Mortals: An Engaging Novoland Watch
I really enjoyed this, mostly because of its content, characters, and the direction of the story. I had a difficult time following the dialogue due to poor English subtitles, but I was able to follow the narrative by gauging what was being said through the actors’ performances in real time. It falls under the Novoland universe, which I’ve watched almost all of, so I felt I needed to give this a try. It features mythical creatures and fantastical backstories, with the winged clan clashing with humans, alongside conflicts and love trials. While the narrative itself may not be new, it does a great job translating fantastical imagery into a believable and engaging story. It was a great on-screen experience. Was this review helpful to you?
A Simple Goddess and a Snake Demon Tale
While I wouldn’t call this a masterpiece or a must-see, I did enjoy watching it. Despite some execution issues and familiar themes that made the film feel somewhat low-impact, I was mainly drawn in by the characters—a reincarnated goddess and a snake demon. I’ve always been intrigued by these types of figures, and the story held my attention through its use of hidden identities, minor backstories, and light conspiracies. I’d say it’s a nice rainy-day watch if you’re into mythological and fantasy themes. Was this review helpful to you?
A Reincarnation Tale That Is Engaging and Flawed
I enjoyed this movie. While there were some execution issues that disrupted the flow at times, the overall narrative was engaging and held my attention all the way through. The ending was a bit confusing trying to cater to dual audiences, resulting in an elusive and abrupt conclusion with little closure. That said, I didn’t mind it; I didn’t feel like watching it was pointless. Reincarnation plots and animal demons are always engaging for me, and I thought this story was delivered with a solid pace, strong acting, and visually striking scenery. The conflicts didn’t drag and contributed meaningfully to both plot progression and character development. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this film. Was this review helpful to you?
Chen Kun and Zhou Xun Steal the Show in Fox Demon Tale
I really enjoyed this, though it might appeal to a more limited audience. The film is dated—and it feels that way. The execution is raw, with a pace and delivery reminiscent of earlier cinema. Compared to contemporary films, it’s unpolished, and at times the storyline can feel a bit disjointed. That said, the plot is engaging and follows a linear progression, with well-developed conflicts and a solid narrative arc. I’ve always loved stories involving fox demons, and seeing Chen Kun and Zhou Xun together on screen is a treat. Their dynamic and the chemistry they bring to their roles are a joy to watch.

A Visually Stunning, Mythical Journey
This is one of my top-shelf picks when it comes to movies. I loved everything about it and still rewatch the trailers to this day. The sequences reflect what I enjoy most in film: dramatic, artistic, stylistically engaging, with a captivating color palette, mythical characters, and intriguing plot developments.I loved the storyline and its execution—the conflicts, the villains, the way the narrative translated to the screen and progressed, including the climactic resolutions. I appreciated the subtle backstories, the character dynamics, the settings and aesthetics, and the way different worlds were transformed from obscure to real and tangible. Watching this felt like going on a journey with the characters all the way to the end—and I wasn’t disappointed.

A Flawed but Thoughtful Coming-of-Age Drama
This drama initially felt like a coming-of-age story, and later shifts into more of a slice-of-life narrative. There were moments I really, really liked it, and others where I simply liked it. While it sometimes felt crowded with subplots, the transitions between them kept the story engaging, and the pacing was quick enough that earlier threads never felt lost. I appreciated how the subplots reflected different stages of life—how perspectives and relationships evolve with age, how second chances can emerge through maturity, and how certain situations can serve as cautionary tales, particularly within family and relationship dynamics. The drama also excelled in using character psychology to reframe an ordinary world, helping us understand the characters’ emotions, fears, and desire for connection. This made them feel vulnerable and engaging, with meaningful growth as they navigated life’s challenges from college into adulthood, while parallel storylines echoed these developments. For these reasons, the narrative felt layered and purposeful, making it easy to connect with each storyline and character.
My main critique was the repetitive cycle of misunderstandings, angst, and frustration between the leads, particularly Yi Yao. I enjoy slow-burn dramas, but felt stronger plot devices could have been used to sustain it rather than relying so heavily on miscommunication or avoidance. I also struggled with some overbearing supporting characters whose behavior often felt intrusive and uncomfortable, repeatedly inserting themselves into situations and pressuring the leads in ways that disrupted the flow of the story. However, I still enjoyed my time watching this version of Guo Jingming’s Cry Me a Sad River.

Fantasy & Deep Reflection
This is an incredibly thoughtful movie. It explores difficult subject matter, addressing and spreading mental health awareness in a unique way by weaving a fantastical story that brings important issues into discussion in engaging ways. It also delves into philosophical questions about love and life, questioning the value of both. Was this review helpful to you?
Better Than the Sequel, But Not a Win
Between the two movies, I enjoyed this one more. I thought it was funnier, the character development was more engaging, the story took time evolving and it didn't feel like we were thrown into a never ending fight between two camps, which is how I felt about the sequel. However, overall, the narrative is still confusing and doesn't have a firm foundation. It seemed like the story started well before the movie did. I had to consult outside sources to understand the stage setup and the conflicts, as this is based on Guo Jingming's novel under the same name, Línjiè Juéjì (临界爵迹). Only then did I appreciate the events as they unfolded. So, I suspect to appreciate this movie would require reading it first. Was this review helpful to you?
High Hopes, But A Miss for Me
This animation wasn’t for me. The visuals are beautiful, but many elements didn’t align with my preferences. The plot felt underdeveloped and poorly explained, and the pacing was off, making it feel like I was watching a slow-moving story about very little. Overall, this was a major miss for me, and I’m still trying to understand the disconnect I felt with it. However, the ending piqued my interest. Was this review helpful to you?
A Simple Story with Deep Emotion
The storyline is simple, but it makes you feel. It teeters between inner turmoil through the pursuit of revenge and internal peace. The character growth and lead relationship are poignant and beautiful. I enjoyed watching this and I would recommend it to all Guo Jingming fans. It’s a fast watch, but by the end it felt like I had been on a full journey, with the characters experiencing and enduring a great deal along the way.Was this review helpful to you?
