To be completely honest, and I hope nobody comes for me,
I personally feel that the KP storyline actually is pretty flat. Comparatively Vegas Pete in the original novel, is beautiful, heartbreaking and jaw dropping. And BoC knew this, so since they are producing and making KP, they wanted for the main couple to have all of those amazing things in the series, that they lack in the novel. They thought, nobody will give two shits if they just give away all of Vegas Pete's magic to the hot main couple, nobody will care. Because everybody will only be talking about the on fire main couple they've got... I guess they never realized that there are hardcore VP stans, who will pick apart every ploy, and misdirection they use, and now it has come down to this. Complete sloppy execution of the second main couple, who might I add they heavily promoted too.

The only thing I'm telling myself is, the VP expectation after this episode is sooooo low, no matter how much more they fuck up, I won't care anymore.
I'll finish watching KP of course, but the magic of waiting and wanting to see the VP arc is kinda diminished. The script for Vegas and Pete has been a complete let down so far, and now onwards I just won't be as invested as before.
After re-watching that VP interaction for god knows how many times ( that is how much starved I am ) I came here…

I also agree to your point of view, and I also believe adaptations doesn't need to stick original materials, and that, like you said makes it interesting. However using a dialogue, a crucial one at that between two pivotal characters from the original novel, and then interchanging it in between two characters in the series for no purpose at all, like zero purpose, makes no sense to me. If they want to develop Vegas Porsche they could've used original lines, original words. They didn't have to use Vegas Pete confession line this way...
