He mistakenly extended their pain, punished himself for doing so, was commiting suicide.. so he is very emotional creature. He tried his best to undo the spell.. finally he understood or came to the realization that his people can only be free of pain by death/non existing. He is not a very villainous character, rather very caring one towards his people.
