This is literally the plot of Hometown-cha-cha-cha 😂 but im not complaining, can't wait!
Well, tons of shows have a similar premise and setting. Like the studio ghibli movie Only Yesterday which came out 3 decades ago. The key difference is the leads are childhood friends who broke off and will reconcile with each other. That sounds like a potentially very different dynamic from hometown. Samdalri also seems to have a family arc.
I love SHS and JCW - both are great actors who are severely underrated. But do all recent dramas have similar…
Tbh most romance dramas follow almost the exact same story development, just in different settings. But that has always been the case, rather the problem now is that the overall quality of writing has dropped. Too many half-hearted webtoon adaptations and dramas with no substance at all.
As usual, Park Eunbin is really good at emoting and already moved me a few times within episode 2. But there are already a bit too many far-fetched and illogical parts in the story. I also cannot care less about the "which male lead is the childhood friend?" trope, it's so cliche and feels like a cheap tactic to create buzz. Hopefully that isn't the focus and the show focuses on the growth journey of the 2 FLs. That would be a potentially good show.
The movie was well done until the culprit was revealed, then it became messy and ended too abruptly. The plot overall is quite lacking but it's a nice cautionary tale about the dangers of the internet. I like SHS but it feels like she only gets low budget or B-grade movie offers unlike her dramas. Nothing wrong with taking some risks to branch out her career though. But the korean movie scene as a whole seems to be going downhill actually.
Ah I remember this webtoon, the FL had the funniest facial expressions ever. Shin hyesun is an impeccable casting with her flexible eyebrow muscles, if you know what I mean lol
IMO that was a perfect ending! Bittersweet yet if you think about it, her presence in their lives though short lived, was a gift to help them find the closure they all needed for over 20 years. The FL deserved to move forward with the burden off her shoulders. Opposed to having a fairy-tale end for the leads, the ending opens doors to new possibilities.
Did anybody notice how the tone of Shin Hye Sun’s voice changes throughout the scenes? I think she intentionally used a more mature sounding tone in this series to match her character but her natural, more youthful tone (how she sounded in Mr Queen) comes out whenever she gets agitated or raises her voice. Those moments sometimes make me go "oh, that's SHS's voice and not Jieum's". Just an observation, but I do think her acting at the end of episode 10 and just in the series overall is very good.
Damn. The show is going into overdrive! We all knew it would need to rush at some point but episode 8 was 1.5 hours of information crammed into one. Nonetheless despite the sloppy pacing it actually had a lot of shock value. I was genuinely shocked at the plot points changed from the webtoon and honestly I'm all here for it. These parts were not handled very well in the webtoon and the changes create more impact on the story. I just hope for a proper wrap up!
It's kinda funny how the length of SHS's bangs constantly change throughout one episode lol. You can really tell they don't film the scenes in order. Also I felt that the show enhanced the good parts of the webtoon but also made the not-so-great parts worse. The sisters' scenes were touching but not utilised or executed emotionally enough in the webtoon, but their bond is amazingly portrayed here. I like the characterization of the FL, vulnerability that is well acted and and her pasts lives are well thought out too.
But making one mystery character that I wasn't really interested in become two, especially one with a blank face all the time (no offence to the actor) makes them seem completely unnecessary. Also, an evil stepmother? Nahhh. Luckily she barely appears. Despite all this if this wraps up well it'll probably be amongst my favourites this year. Cheers!
I'll be honest i can't be bothered to read to the webtoon so I have a few questions for those who completed it:do…
1. Yes, they explain it towards the end of the story.
2. If you mean the first out of her 19 lives, yes. Whether that is her actual first life of her existence on earth is not really specified though.
3. It's mentioned that after so many lives, she decided to isolate herself from others at some point to prevent the pain that will eventually come. But she somehow got emotionally invested in her relationship with Seoha, likely because she was so deprived of human connection (and had the hormones of a pre-teen). And at that point in time, he was a spoiled, lonely child who couldn't make friends due to his personality, so they were kind of on the same boat (this was emphasized more in the webtoon). When all that got cut short, she ended up in a shit family and had a miserable fate in her 19th life. So why not take matters into her own hands and escape from that environment to reconnect with him when she had the rare chance of instant reincarnation. All that or the more realistic answer, it's just for setting up the story lol.
There were a few changes that didn't seem too major but might cause a big change in the story. In the webtoon…
Same here. In the webtoon, the dad does not exactly come across as an antagonist at first. They probably wanted the dad and the stepmom to be more dramatic antagonists but for now the dad feels like a stereotypical villain.
Did they follow the webtoon's story in the first ep? Were there any major changes in the storyline??
There were a few changes that didn't seem too major but might cause a big change in the story. In the webtoon the ML's dad acted condescending towards him and mocked him for his disability at every chance, but never showed violence. The drama version had the dad throw a bunch of papers/stuff at him. Also, he seemingly remarried a woman after the ML's mom's death who would be the CEO of the hotel. Basically he's a violent and borderline abusive douche now instead of the intimidating, passive aggressive dad in the webtoon.
