Series with a beautiful love story and cinematography

This was my first Taiwanese BL to watch and I loved it! I was engaged with the story right from the start and not once during the show did I feel bored even if the topic of this show is nothing new. If I had to describe this show with only one word, I would say that it’s calm. Nothing in this series feels rushed, but rather they give the viewer room to breathe and think, making the show feel airy. It’s such a contrast to all the Thai BL series I have watched so far with their way too many characters, fast moving plot, sometimes over the top acting and rather loud atmosphere.

First thing that I noticed about this show was actually cinematography, which is so new to me, since I’m not usually one to talk much about this topic. I don’t have much knowledge in this area, but even I could tell that it was beautifully done. The scenes were just right - not too long and not too short. The locations! I was really into the short atmospheric shots before the actual scene started. It already gave you the feeling for the scene. Also can we talk about the color palette! Color tone for this show was chosen so well, it worked really well with the rest of the cinematography. Lastly the music, they chose mostly calm instrumental piano and guitar songs and they did amazing in this kind of series. I was actually quite mesmerized with the soundtrack. There was just enough music, but they also used many scenes with no music at all. And it all worked so well! One of the scenes I really liked was the piano scene with Zhou Shu Yi at the start of the series.

Second thing for me was the character Zhou Shu Yi (portrayed amazingly by Yu). Hands down he was my favorite in the whole show! He stole my heart right from the start. His story about always giving 100% but not being enough is something that a lot of people can connect with. I certainly did. Him being rather introverted than extroverted is something I can really relate to. I guess I just saw so much of myself in him. Also, can we talk about his fashion? I would love to have his entire wardrobe. And if we are in this topic I found the symbolism of the necklace so good! We can really see him change during these six episodes. One thing about his story that bothered me was his father. He was mentioned once and shown only once, but nothing came out of this later. Why was he even necessary to show? His scene felt so out of place from the rest of the show. My only guess is that he will be more important in the second season?

Third thing that I loved was the love story between Zhou Shu Yi and Gao Shi De. Their chemistry was just phenomenal. I liked their cat and dog kind of relationship, that was done just right. I didn’t get frustrated or annoyed with them. It seemed that writers knew exactly when to move their story forward and when to drag it a little longer - perfect balance. It was very refreshing to see how at the beginning both of them really worked through their feelings about unrequited love, before the story moved forward. I have to point out this amazing question this show gave us - If you like someone, is it their business to know? I could debate about it for quite some time… Once they actually manage to get together, I must say that I loved their communication with each other. It was so clear to see that they loved each other without having to make their relationship overly sexualised. I liked how they ended the story with a long distance relationship. Neither of them had to give something up to be with the other. I do have to say that I liked this ending until I watched the special scene after episode 6 credits and special episode 6.5. After that the ending left me really confused. What happened? Of course it was a perfect cliffhanger for the second season, I guess, but it ruined the love story for me a little bit.

It seems that a lot of creators' energy went into making the main storyline good because the side couples and their stories were definitely not as thought through. Yes, the main couple had great supportive friends, who didn’t shy away from giving them hard truths, but they were so poorly developed. They were in this show clearly only to support the main love story. I quite enjoyed Fang Zheng Wen and Jiang Yu Xin's relationship, but we didn’t really get to know them. As for the second BL couple, I felt that they were a little bit unnecessary. Also their story seemed so underdeveloped and I didn’t even completely understand how they got together. The show would have been good whether they were in it or not. And then we had Pei Shou Yi, who for some reason wasn’t my favorite. Yes, he played quite a role in getting the main couple together, but his own storyline was kinda missing? We got hints about him having a bad love experience in the past, but we didn’t really learn what happened. I did get an inkling that it was love or crush with a student(?), but I am not completely sure…

All in all, I recommend watching this show because of the really good main couple and amazing filming and postproduction. And I would probably watch it again some time, because of the cinematography and the main character Zhou Shu Yi. However if you are not into slow moving stories, then maybe this show is not your cup of tea.
