You are asking a very relevant question. The only hypothesis I can make is that maybe he never confirmed Crown Prince was a boy. Maybe he concluded the CP was a girl all the time because he Lee Hyun was never informed about the twin and the maid Dam-i. After all the twin sister was killed so no one would never know. Maybe the former Crown princess only had a girl and they made her a Crown Prince in disguise ever since?

Or maybe he discovered later when they are adults that he is a she and he would not ask about it. Because it would endanger her. He is so caring of her.

1. It's a speculation. In the forest, the guard who is hidding from the troops removing the body of the assassin is holding a sword in a sheath with a particular ornament and one half of wooden plate (a name tag maybe). When Kim Ga On meets Lee Hwi for the first time as he starts his job as her bodyguard, he carries the same sword.

2. I don't think it is male to male attraction. When Lee Hyun gives the ring to Lee Hwi, he tells him to give it to his future lady. If he was attracted to the Crown Prince as a man, he would not have said that or done that. Because it would be a torture for himself as it would remind him that he Crown Prince loves women and he love him as a man. Looking at how happy he looked, it is clear that he gave the ring to the Crown prince hoping it would go to the finger of that woman he likes.

To me infatuation is not physical or sexual. It is an out of proportion feeling of love, attachment and admiration. It can apply in the case of a mother with her child or a student with a major.

In this case, Lee Hyun has is mind totally and unreasonnably focused on the Crown prince. He prepares taylored brushes as gift, he goes to find her at the hunting grounds once he has arrived, risks his life for her and takes her to safety, sneaks his way next to her, touches her hand, goes to prevent her from shooting her tutor, pleads for her, goes to find her at the library, buys her the ring she likes, holds her hand while runnig and basically he hugs her to protect her from water splash.

Beside this he does nothing during his day or with his hands and works on nothing. So for me, this level of infatuation is an obsession for someone he knows is a girl.

No I did not read the manhwa and I don't intend to. I consider the drama and the manhwa two different pieces of work and I don't expect the drama to follow everything of the manhwa.

My comment is just an appreciation based on my understanding of his actions and his apparent state of mind in his relationship with the Crown Prince. He is obviously treats her like someone he wants to woo and he clearly sees her as a woman since he bought a ring for her.

1) He is probably one of the two guards in blue who were in the forest. The other one is dead and he was injured. But it does not necessarily mean he is the one who shot arrows at the Crown Prince.

2) He knows. This is why he bought her the ring she liked. What kind of man buys a ring for another man and tells him to give it to his future betrothed? He is totally the guy who knows and feign ignorance to try to sneak into her heart.

In each and every scene of him, what he says and does is directly related to her. He is just totally infatuated to someone and that is the essential of his character. He has no older brother, no uncle to talk to, not an eunuch to serve him, no ambition, no plot or project he is in... The bodyguard looks more intriguing than him. Beside his relationship with the Crown Prince, he is quite an empty character so far. Hope this will change soon. I would hate that his only role is to play the third wheel.

Not only he loves her but he is obsessed by her. Every moment we see him, it is all about her for him. There is nothing but her in his mind. Either he drifts away from that using his friendship with the ML or else, he will follow a sad path trying to win her heart.

Lee Hyun is the one who jumped in it first without knowing he is in between two childhood lovers.

The king is a coward but I don't think he sent the assassin on his son. Probably the doing of the Queen or her father. But surely he would change the title of Crown Prince to his younger son if it was easy to do.

Lee Hyun knows the Crown Prince is a woman. He was absolutely not shocked that she stopped and checked a ring. He noticed Lee Hwi liked that ring and he bought it for her. That story about her, the Crown Prince finding a lady and giving the ring to her is an underhanded way he found to make her accept his gift. He wishes when she is a woman in private, she puts the ring on her finger and thinks about him. Naughty schemer. lol.

The assassin on the bridge seems to have the same sword with the same ornament but his badge is placed differently and it does not seem one half but a whole one. Maybe he and the bodyguard know each other or belong to a same special military unit?

I am also impressed by her acting. She is scheming, cold, nagging, snappish then she looks also vulnerable and restrained. A woman disguised into a Crown Prince. She is doing great.

Kim Ga On have a half cut wood badge so he is the man in the woods of the Royal hunting gounds who killed one of the assassin. But I don't believe he is an assassin himself. He is not the man in black on the bridge who makes the old man fall in the river.
