We follow two tormented souls, consumed by desire and resentment. They survive the worst conspiracies and yearn for equality. An unwanted princess, born to one of the emperor’s mistresses. She is forced to marry a man who holds her in no regard but refuses to let her leave for another, because his masculine pride matters more to him than his own life. This is the story of an alliance between this woman, flawed but courageous, and a low-born civil servant seeking to avenge his father’s death and disgrace. A flamboyant duo ! Their dynamic is sometimes funny and always touching; she completely dominates their relationship, and that suits him just fine.

As usual, the sets and costumes are stunning. A scene set in a bamboo forest in the rain, with the night lit by torches ; I couldn’t ask for more. A scene with just red and orange drapery bathed in sublime evening light, perhaps? How beautiful.
18 episodes, each about 20 or 30 minutes long ; it goes by very quickly. It could certainly be an interesting way to get into C-dramas. And the plot goes from unexpected twists to tragic ones. The ending is excellent ; emotionally gripping and unexpected.
And the music is truly beautiful.
Episode 15 uses AIgen to show houses being swept away by a river flood. Not a single artist to do that for you ? Really ? Just a 5-second clip ? What a disgrace. Shame on the production team for this pathetic choice that ruins everything else, and, by extension, the technicians' work !
