I am not ready yet to say its bad, but I really didn't love the direction of tonight's episodes. Everyone's motive for doing terrible things sounds so shallow and petty. I kind of feel like the writer seriously lacks depth.

Agree completely. He saw an opportunity for his daughter to become empress and seized the moment. His son's ambition was simply a reflection of his own. I do think the emperor could have let his son's treason slide bc it was debatable what his true intent was. But the emperor didn't bc he resented Zhuang Shen for killing his beloved wife and he wanted to hurt him back. And that is also why he never even considered his second son for the throne.

Looks like his brother or stepmother poisoned him. And I think it would make sense to do it with a poison that makes him impotent bc he does have a claim to the throne, you don't want him to be spawning kids left and right.

She is quoting or paraphrasing Confucius - only when there is a family there can be a nation有家才有国. In modern times it was turned around as a patriotic slogan that highlights the the opposite is also true 有国才有家 - only when there is a nation there can be a family. They are integral to each other.
