Mandarin dumbed Chinese dialects down to 5 tones, the 5th which is a blank tone. So as he points out many words sound incredibly similar or even have the same pinyin with different meanings. But he is being ridiculous - no one would ever say such nonsensical things in real life. Other dialects including Cantonese and Hokkien have many more tones so this doesn’t happen as often as in Mandarin but they are also slightly harder to learn bc you need to know more tones. This dude is definitely a Southern Chinese and most likely Singaporean or Malaysian from the way he speaks Mandarin and English.

I understand and I agree with you but you should know that especially in ancient or historical stories, 爱is very rarely used even though it is clear the couple love each other deeply. It is much more common to see 喜欢. So to me anyway, it doesn't diminishes YH's feelings for TY, I think its kind of an innocent and shy way to express herself and very in character for YH. I have the impression 爱is more common in modern romances but I rarely read (or watch) that genre so I am not 100pct sure.

But in their context, it is understood that her 喜欢 really means love anyway and I would have translated it that way and not as like. Chinese people culturally have a very hard time using 爱 so explicitly which is why 喜欢 is more commonly used. Only when lovers are in private and very confident or long established in their mutual feelings for each other that they would use 爱. And of course it definitely carries the meaning of a deeper love, tested by time, maturity etc,
