I think he's just too obsessed and blind to the consequences, he's only focused on his goal, ignoring how he keeps hurting himself and everyone else in the process...but this obsession feels like a drug to him I think, he keeps going back even though I'm sure he's aware that it won't work, that Jack won't love him, but he still wants this delusion to happen

I think he still felt guilty and he was worried about what happend (he also was absent-minded while they were painting things for the play and Jack noticed it), maybe he felt that he didn't really changed like he wanted to, always making the same mistakes, despite his true love for Jack... honestly that's hard to interpret
