Some of us chinese are still particular about family hierarchy. Eg my son addressed father’s elder sister as Ku ma. As we fret that son cannot remember the ‘status’ we tend to call his Ku Ma as Ku Ma in too in family gathering. So at times it became a habit. Jokers right? and strangers can address as AhJie/Mei as a matter of courtesy. In Ipoh Malaysia, strangers can address me as LengLui… meaning pretty
girl.. tho i am not at all🤣🤣🤣

Yep, it could be an affectionate nickname. My son calls his father ‘old bean’ literally translated father in colloquial cantonese😝🤭🫶🏻🫶🏻
