Something about the aesthetics of this drama is not quite working for me. But i'm quite invested in the characters and their story, so i guess i'll be seated for the next 30 eps.

Came with zero expectations and i think it really was the key to enjoy it as it is. Entertaining enough when i'm not in the mood for complicated backstory and lore but still quite engaging with the fresh take on the fantasy element. It also helped that Zheng Yecheng can masterfully thread between the different level of entanglement with the FL cause just from his expression alone we can easily distinguish between anger, disgust, and when he slowly realize it has turned into something else.

it's not from the novel. chang yu only meet her after almost the end of the story in the novel.

Yeah, i totally agree with you. My problem is not about the existence of the political aspect itself in the drama, but the way it's being told. It's not a good story telling if they have to constantly narrates things happening in the background to us. They need to actually show us how these things actually happen.

Yup, i think things will finally get moving in the near future if we're going by the teaser. Hopefully as ML leaves the village and moving closer to the center of the problem we're finally see things actually happening instead of just being told about it happening in the background

After 13 eps here's what i think about the pros and cons of this drama so far,
Pros:
- superb cinematography
- solid character building, great attention to detail, especially for the main characters
- everyone is pretty!
- kisses! Better romantic build up than in the novel
- good chemistry between characters, not just romantically, but also between families and friends
Cons:
- when they're dealing with the political aspect of the story, it's too much talk, less action
- that makes it harder to keep track of things, cause we have to constantly pay attention to what they're saying, instead of actually seeing things happening

Those are just a few things that i can point out in top of my head. Overall it all comes down to the viewers preference, whether they like focusing on the romance, or the political intrigue. For me, the contrast between both just feels a bit jarring at times. It's like, one moment we are indulged by the careful romantic build up, next time we're dragged into complicated backstory that was being rapidly thrown on a quick gossipy session. At the end of the say, as a drama, i still enjoy watching it, but as an adaptation... It remains to be seen i guess.

there definitely is A LOT and it really needs to be emphasized. i understand that this director really loves building romantic rapport between it's characters and creating domestic swoony moments that is very pleasing to watch. on the other hands, this drama is struggling in explaining the political intrigues and dynamics, especially since they make a lot of changes from the novel in this regard. at least that's what i get so far.

i have to agree on this. especially as i've read the novel before, kinda worried how they could fit everything if they're going by this pacing constantly.

it's going to be a bit of a spoiler but this is also consistent with how she act when she eventually finds out that yan zheng is the well known general and marquis wuan. she wasn't just angry that he lied, but she steps back cause she wants to establish herself. she wants to be on an equal standing so she said lemme work through the rank so we could finally be together again proudly on public or something like that.

truly, viewers comments can sometimes enhance the experience lol i guess being excited together beats giggling alone in our own room on any day

not very accurate (a lot of character being introduced earlier than in the novel and some relationships between side characters has been changed), it seemed that they're trying to simplify the story which make sense since the original was super complicated and would definitely not fit into 40 eps.

can't speak for other platform but i'm watching it on wetv and they also provides extra explanation during the jin ran'er(?) bits (when yan zheng answered changyu's question whether he has other family member and changyu misunderstood jin ran'er as his stepdad's name).

oh that's for sure, xie zheng was always all about changyu. he doesn't always say it but his action is enough to make a point to everyone around them.

linghe is considered very slender for his height. but tian xiwei herself is actually quite strong; she has carried some of her other co stars before this. there were footages of her carrying joseph zheng and dylan wang (on separate occasions of course) before this.

her styling is already very pretty for a butcher though. but yeah, sadly you'll have to wait for a while until she actually gets to wear noble lady attire if that's what you're looking for

and also the supposed growth on her fighting style. the book made a point that her early fighting style was much more crude, more relying on brute strength and less elegant. emphasizing the fact that she never really has to exercise her fighting skills up until that point. but in the drama, right away she was already flying and slashing enemies here and there since the beginning. so, there isn't much room to grow.

but it all looks pretty on screen so at the end of the day, it's still a win for us i guess.

chang yu made an issue of it because, since yan zheng is actually xie zheng, she thinks their marriage is void cause she's married to yan zheng. but eventually they compromise. they even have a second wedding at the end of the story.

they separated a few times throughout the story (one those of was a very painful event) but they always managed to resolves it

there are bts clips that shows she actually carried him without wires. maybe on some shots there are wires involved but the fact that she indeed carryed him during filming is true

no, it has been hinted that Chancellor Wei is ML's uncle, so he can't be FL's grandfather, otherwise this story would take a totally different direction...
