I discovered this drama too late!
This is a drama that’s really not easy to judge. Douluo Continent has very good ratings on MDL, but when you look at the dates, you can see that most of the reviews are from 2021, which is the year the drama was released.
But what about in 2026? Well, the first thing that comes to mind is how much I regret not having discovered this drama back then. Because while today I find the CGI and special effects extremely low-budget, I’m sure that when it first came out, they must have looked incredible, and people absolutely loved it.
Throughout the entire drama, I could feel the immense potential and the aura of Douluo Continent. The actors and actresses are very good, the story holds up, and it’s pretty well directed, even though the ending is one massive cliffhanger, which I absolutely hate. That being said, I do think this is a drama that has aged quite poorly. Some episodes, especially those where the chemistry between the members of the group really shines through, are genuinely fantastic. But there are also a lot of episodes with rather slow pacing, along with that low-budget feel that really stands out to modern viewers.
It’s by no means a bad drama. If you’re looking for an adventure story featuring a group of young adventurers, and you don’t mind knowing that the ending is unsatisfying, then you can definitely give it a try, especially if you’re not bothered by old-school CGI.
But as I said, in my case, I think I’m simply unable to appreciate it for what it truly is. And once again, I really wish I had watched it when it first came out in 2021.
I just found out that a second season was released in 2024 and has pretty good ratings, so I’m going to watch it and see if it works better for me, even though almost all of the actors have been replaced.
