Because he was kidnapped by the old guy and he knows he is always on the watch he doesn’t dare to say anything. Or he’s quite because he is planning to take revenge on the family and it was by consequence that he met his brother because if he said anything to him then the plan would be ruined. He was probably that one that sent the letters to the mom because he wanted her to be anxious and make her not even be able to trust anyone of her people again. It is either the little brother or that girl with the glasses that brought out the rotten food, maybe they even working together.

I am properly wrong with the little brother doing the revenge thing and It's more likely that it's the girl. But I would like it more if it was the little brother because it would make more sense for him to do it.
