I might respect your views but after 3rd time of reading it, I still feel a high level of prejudice towards the series.

What caused you to make this review?

What is your agenda?

You even cited Love by Chance here, meaning you really have something against the author, as some antis criticize for propagating rape culture. Isn't it too harsh to brand someone like that when you don't even seek for explanation from her or even hear out her views?

The agenda for self-righteousness and being moralist is very strong. The series is not even promoted to be a representation of any community. Yet, there are people who see the characters as toxic and then immediately regard them as not good representations of being homosexual or their relationship not a good representation of homosexual relationships.

I can respect negative reviews when they present logical yet open view explanation. But in your case, there's nothing substantial.

How do you want Type to be treated for his PTSD? Do you want him to be done in a way like in Grey's Anatomy? Have you watched Holby City with the gay characters Isaac and Dom, whose plot also revolves around domestic violence between a gay couple?

This kind of review is done to propagate a BIGOTED agenda.

Anyways, to break down what I think is problematic in your review, we'll start with Type.

Type's homophobia stems from a past rape incident. How does the series approach his story? By opening up to Tharn about his being a rape victim. The dialogues of Tharn and Type with the latter revealing his being a victim is very important in the character development of Tharn.

Why did Type desire to have sex with Tharn?

Perhaps, you're a female and straight and have very limited view of male sexuality. As young as Type, he's susceptible in giving in to his lust. By the way, this is BL with gay love and even gay sex. The fact that you even failed to consider the male sexuality and the need for a character to have sex proves of your lack of understanding of the characters.

Maybe you asked, but Type is a rape victim?

Have you even interviewed any rape victim?

There are many types of rape victims and their personalities have been affected during their teen years to adulthood. There are victims that may find sex gross and there are those whose perception of sex is evolved. I don't want to speak in behalf of them but based on the interview I had when I visited a sanctuary of these victims, there are victims that tend to be sexually aggressive. Again, different victims have different approaches of their trauma from rape incidents. Some victims may not agree to this but the interview was done first hand.

The thing is you want to have a different take of that scene. You have that assumption that all rape victims act the same or have similar approaches in dealing certain situations that trigger their trauma. There is a fallacy in this kind of perception as you don't really have a grasp of individual weaknesses especially in differences of male personalities.

Now, with that info, it's likely that Type has more strength in character despite his homophobia as opposed to Tar who is more reclusive and evasive. Type's approach to sex is even more aggressive as he always finds time to relieve himself when he's alone in the room. With Type's strength, he could take down Tharn anytime. But then his weakness is lust, sex as shown in the shower scene with Tharn though people see it first as sexual assault, which I agree, but it ended up a mutual activity for both of them. But after that, it made Type confused more. It was even revealed that he already experienced sex with girls so there's a possibility that sex for him is relieving tension from his body.

In this case, the author conveys a character who dares to bury his tragic past but as a consequence, a new demon arises and that is his being homophobic. Type is known for his compliments as what he thinks of Tharn when he first moved in with the latter in the same room.

Prior to knowing Tharn's orientation, Type often commented that his roommate is very handsome. Hence, there is a vibe here that speaks of attraction though not sexual.

"Tharn is gross. Just awful. He has zero respect for Type's boundaries. He sexually assaults him multiple times: in the shower; while he's sleeping; tells Type to "watch his ass" after they become friends again and after Tharn knows about Type having been kidnapped and raped; pushes him into a wall and threatens him when he thinks Type is flirting at a bar... just horrible. He agrees to have sex with Type even when Type explains that he is offering because a) he feels like he owes Tharn and b) he's afraid Tharn is going to do it at some point anyway so he wants to get it over with. When someone tells you they don't think they can say no to having sex with you because of factors that don't have to do with their immense desire to have sex with you, going ahead and having sex with them is rape. The writing completely ignores the coercive element of their first time. No, in fact, afterwards, Tharn tells Type that even though he said they could do it just once, it wasn't going to be just once, and then proceeds to continue to pester him until Type gives in again, which basically marks the start of their "romantic" relationship. "

I agree. His character is awful but throughout the series, he tries to redeem himself in the eyes of Type.

Now, the question is how do you approach this? By using the moralist approach of making Tharn turn into a sheep after being soaked with cold water?

Your approach to the characters is very erroneous as you want the character to suit your taste. Again, as a viewer, you don't have that right. Your right is to see the characters evolve as they battle with their inner demons. This is not a series that attempts people to be morally right. That's why I feel like in the first place, you feel like trying to seek for a Messiah or a poster boy for a certain group of people or community.

Approach the characters with an open mind, not the prejudice that you may have.

Tharn is manipulative. He knows he likes Type. He finds a way to provoke the latter. And he also tries to make the latter fall for him. But is Tharn really that evil?

He helps Type by approaching the characters who accused Type of homophobia. That's a risk on his part considering Type was not fond of him yet at that time. But he worked on making Type less stressful and depressive upon knowing of Type's tragic past and the usual approach of Type in dealing with stressful situations involving him.

Tharn's action reached Type through Techno, who also revealed that Tharn likes Type. Type confronted Tharn about the latter's admiration of him. There is a sense of confusion on Type's part after that. But it's also implied that their relationship from enemies to friends improved.

I get that the way the storyline is done is fast-paced. But this is a strong point in this series as it has an anticlimax, which is the invitation from Type to have sex with Tharn. Many viewers don't realize this because they want another approach. But because the story is fast-paced and there is an issue of Type's homophobia, the series must go through a scene that should resolve this. In this case, Type invites Tharn to have sex with him despite the latter knowing of Type's homophobic behavior. Type used that invitation as a way to pay back Tharn as he only thought of this way. It's also implied that Type's attraction towards Tharn became strong but he tried hard to suppress it.

Note that Type's weakness is his lust. And this seems understandable for a virile man who is into sports. But viewers demand for a different approach thus this kind of review which you posted. Again, maybe you need to write a BL series that appeals to the mainstream. Spare this one.

You forget that this is an artistic output not an instrument to change people's lives. It has an adult rating thus there is a need for discernment. If you think that the series is not in parallel with your belief then why did you even manage to waste your time writing a negative review?

As for considering TharnType's relationship a good representation of homosexual relationship in any way, again this relationship exists in fiction. It is not proper to look at fictional LGBT characters in relationships to be good representation of homosexual relationships. Is it even an issue to begin with?

James Bond is a toxic(deadly) character because he has a license to kill. But did people even think of him as toxic that really needs saving?

Our role as viewers is to empathize with the characters and to scrutinize the actors on how they manage in approaching the characters through certain acting techniques.

I have never even thought of saving them, rather I anticipate, observe and scrutinize their character development.

Has Tharn become worst and turned into a rapist in this season?

Has Type become a worst homophobic that he ignored his best friend, Khom, who also happens to be gay and couldn't take Type's homophobia during one incident?

Type's reconciliation with Khom happened in the special episode.

That's why this series has an adult rating because adults have learned the process of discernment or so I thought.

Are Type and Tharn's characters worthy of emulation?

Is it even a question? You even said they're toxic.

Besides, there is no campaign that put TharnType as model relationship for homosexual couples.

But what I like of their relationship is on how Tharn has managed to love the person who is even homophobic. It reminds me of the characters Lang Wangji and Wei Wuxian of The Untamed.

Wei Wuxian is a toxic character, even more deadly than Tharn or even Type(LOL) as he is the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. But why does Wangji still love Wuxian despite his association with the dark cultivation?

Wangji stuck with Wuxian after finding out of the latter's forced reincarnation. But did Wangji save Wuxian? In certain challenges in certain scenes, perhaps, yes. But it was Wuxian who realized the error of his ways. With the assistance of Wangji, he redeemed himself from the dark path.

I don't want it to parallel with TharnType, but in this case, I am forced to because of what people perceive of them as characters that need saving.

Like isn't LOVE between them enough?

Wangji's love for Wuxian seems enough for the latter to realize his dark path.

I really have a problem with this kind of thinking. You're imposing righteousness to characters from fiction. I'd rather watch characters evolve as they battle with their inner demons than be that viewer that tries to dictate what this character should have done so he can be saved.

I don't know your real agenda is. But comments such as yours and others who posted negative reviews against the series have certain agenda.

I am not making fun of the victims but I find it disconcerting how they still want to proceed.

I actually saw comments here(already buried and assumed to be deleted) had this complaint and posted her sentiments. Like, she probably failed to read the novel first(which was understandable at that time) or she was not given the warning beforehand. I wasn't even sure if she was mature enough.

Honestly, this kind of content is very mature that there's a content rating and warning right before the start of each episode. I am no psychologist but I think sexual assault victims are advised not to view content that contains sexual activities. It may trigger their PTSD. But then, TharnType already has that warning at the beginning. So the risk now lies to the viewers.

The thing is many international viewers complain that the actions of Tharn is romanticizing sexual assault. I agree that it was disturbing but they failed to see some factors and that this is gay content, BL. It is not a mainstream content.

I would probably have the same sentiment if this would be shown in the mainstream. But then BL, gay content with this kind of scenes will always be categorized in the niche genre.

But then other BL fans are campaigning for the BL content to become mainstream. They cite 2gether as an example for its mainstream success. With this agenda, they want BL content to be free from non-consensual sex and other unnecessary intimacies. LMAO.

Like HONEY!

Look at what happened to Fifty Shades of Grey. It was an attempt to make BDSM mainstream. It was even regarded as mommy porn. Though it gained box office success, it received mixed to negative reviews.

In fairness, the negative reviews are mostly on the pacing of the storyline and acting unlike the negative reviews of so-called critics of TharnType who dwell on the lack of resolution on the homophobia of Type, Tharn's gaslighting and Lhong being set free, situations that are addressed in the series in an implied manner but they failed to see because they have better resolutions in their minds. How about you write your own novel instead?

What I don't like of these MORALIST and SELF-RIGHTEOUS 'viewers' is that they brand fans of TharnType as rape advocates. The injustice they convey just shows their being BIGOTED.

I honestly don't think of them as viewers because they can freely ignore this kind of content. However, I liken their actions to that of European conquers and Christian missionaries who imposed their homophobic, self-righteous beliefs to American Indians and indigenous Filipino people. Now, homophobic beliefs still prevalent in my community in the Philippines with self-righteous people almost everywhere.

"There was no resolution to all circumstances in their lives, with both of them (with the inclusion of Tar) being sexually abused by older men in the past! It's so frustrating that as a viewer, we're seeing the effects of their trauma and they just come into terms with it. With Tharn's gaslighting, nonconsensual sexual advances in the early eps (which he didn't apologized for), emotional manipulation, the total ignorance towards Type's mental illness, when we see him everytime he concedes with Tharn's manipulative ways. And that sends a dangerous message to victims of sexual abuse out there."

I pointed to you the resolution which was done more in actions than incorporating it in dialogues.

As for Tharn's gaslighting, I shared to you the justifications of his actions. Again, he is not a squeaky clean character some viewers expect for a protagonist and that makes him more interesting.

As for the victims of sexual abuse, that's why this series has an adult rating. If they are triggered by this content, then why should they consume it? If they would continue, then they would be disappointed as their expectations for resolutions as would be normally seen in Western shows such as visiting psychiatrists, taking medication for depression and other Western beliefs are not incorporated in the show. This is a show in Thailand, in the East that is not Christian but Buddhist.

I am not sure how the Thais do it but we have been aware that this series is based on a work of fiction.

As for why Lhong was not convicted of his evil doing, this issue is always raised by some viewers.

Again, there is an essence of Forgiveness here, which people in the West and even in countries that adhere to beliefs of revenge and justice fail to see.

Why does the author let Lhong free and unpunished?

Isn't his mental anguish, losing his best friend and being sent into exile not enough?

Tharn probably didn't want to deal with lawsuits and court hearings. It is implied that Tharn and Type decide to let this matter go as Lhong has already been punished with his doing.

Again, this may be a surprise in characters shift in behaviour in dealing with certain matters. But then international viewers want to impose their beliefs which they want to be incorporated in this series.

Haven't they had respect to the author?

And then some fans would argue, would we let this kind of belief prevalent in the BL World?

Haven't they realized that there are tropes in Japanese BL that may not be suitable for their taste?

And then another question, why is this series getting this hype?

Again, the imposition of beliefs, their Western beliefs to Eastern shows that adhere to beliefs of Love and Forgiveness as opposed to Revenge and Criminal Justice.

I don't see RESPECT for this kind of BL fans, Maybe they would just ignore this series and proceed with their lives than leave reviews that reek of prejudice.

As to why Type became sexually addicted to Tharn, it is implied in the dialogue in Episode 4 that Tharn learned the ropes of sexual healing and proper gay sex at a young age after his first sexual experience with a guy, which he didn't like. This narration is an implication that Tharn may have learned tantric sex, a sex guide that exists in Hindu and Buddhism literature. Considering Thailand is Buddhist country, he might have learned it although this information is yet to be found in the novel. Hence, it is an implication as Tharn accepted himself as a homosexual at a young age and have been through different sexual partners, including a girl which he didn't like.

Approach the series with an open mind as it may integrate beliefs and culture different from yours.

Many international BL fans are guilty of ignoring the culture of Thailand especially the fans who come from conservative countries whose beliefs tend to be moralist and self-righteous.

They have their comment about the usual tropes of lakorn, Thai dramas and yet fail to understand why are these practices prevalent. They seem to demand behaviours to be applied on the BL characrers based on their beliefs, thus showing their superiority complex.

Firstly, both Tharn and Type are young adults. They are in the age of consent. But as young adults, they are susceptible to making wrong decisions. Hence, they are not squeaky clean characters. They both have faults. They both committed errors. But what justified their actions?

Even though the justification seem pointless and their actions still bordering on evil, people can find understanding of their characters based on prior events as shown in the scenes of the series.

Now, we'll tackle the sexual assault committed by Tharn.

Why did Tharn do it? Is it because of hatred, anger and the chance to get back at Type, while he's sleeping?

Take note, Type here is a sportsman. He is taller and slim muscular and plays football, thus his strength surpasses that of Tharn.

But during the time when Type was drunk and asleep and vulnerable, Tharn used that opportunity to get back at Type?

Is Tharn evil for doing that?

Yes. I can even say he is EVIL. But what pushed him to do that.

Firstly, Type is a his ideal man. Second, despite Type being is ideal man, the person happens to be homophobic, someone he despises. Thirdly. Type committed many atrocious things towards him. At that moment, any thoughts of righteousness may have escaped from his consciousness and what he wanted to do was to give revenge.

Prior to that event, Type's friend Techno even warned him about the possibility of things as he was sleeping with the enemy.

During the shower scene, many people see Tharn doing another sexual assault.

Again, what prompted Tharn to do that?

Did Type like what Tharn did to him in the shower?

If I were Type, I would have kicked Tharn considering his body type and strength. He even kicked Tharn in the CR at the club when they were already dating. So kicking him would just be a piece of cake. But then he was horny. He tried to masturbate at that room until Tharn discovered him. After that event, Type was even more confused.

I suggest you approach this series with an adult mind like what you would when you were watching CSI or other crime series. But then if your mind has not been expanded with other genres of movies and shows, then I feel like your take on this series would be very narrow bordering on being MORALIST.

Many viewers of the series also read the novel to know the perspectives of Type during those scenes. So I suggest you do so....

How did Type deal with his being a rape victim?

If you have watched episode 4, Type narrated what happened to him during that time. Upon knowing what Type had gone through, Tharn became more understanding. And this even lead Type more confused of his feelings towards Tharn. Take note, not even Techno his best friend knew about Type being a rape victim. It was Tharn who first knew about this, a person he considered his enemy upon learning of Tharn's orientation.

As for how Type dealt with homophobia and why he slept with Tharn, didn't you watch the event in those scenes that led Type to get confused about his feelings for Tharn?

First, Tharn helped Type from the public shaming of being homophobic in their campus by talking to the victims of Type. And those victims happened to be friends of Techno who learned that Tharn liked Type from those two LGBT characters who had an altercation with Type.

Techno then relayed that info to Type, which even made Type confused as someone who is gay liked him despite him being homophobic. At this point, didn't you see the shift in these characters and their feelings?

You see it a messy storyline when in fact you failed to closely monitor the shift in their attitudes towards each other, especially in the case of Type.

Type could have moved out to another room but then why did he decide to stay knowing the dangers he might go through again as he was rooming with a gay man? But his arrogance won him over, thinking he could pin down Tharn, a music major, that easily.

That's why it's important to know the characters as well as their attributes to gauge their capabilities. Authors normally incorporated the strength of their characters. If there is no narration, viewers can assume the strength of the characters based on their stature, hobbies and inclinations. The series requires you to closely observe the characters, actions, gestures or even shifts in eye movements.

As someone who is initially prejudiced to the series, you may have clearly failed that.

Now, as for the time jump on the decision of Type to have sex with Tharn, it is implied that it happened during a semester break. Type asked Tharn not to go home. Also, Type used that opportunity when the dorm was not crowded so they wouldn't be heard when they had their sex for the first time.

Again, closely observe the dialogue. if you fail to grasp the first time, watch the episode again. That's what I did as someone who initially thought the series would be just purely erotic and problematic.

Have an open mind.

I suggest you also watch Moonlight, the first LGBT film to win an Oscar Best Picture so you will know how to understand problematic characters in TharnType. The main character of the Oscar-winning film is also problematic but it helps in showing the scenes leading to his sad adulthood, a character who leans on the gay side but is an ex-convict and drug dealer.

if you are bigoted, don't watch the series. But if you open your minds and you proceed beyond the episodes that Bible-thumpers and moralists consider to have contents with sexual assault, then by all means, enjoy yourself watching the rest of the series as you use your hearts and minds understanding the characters and circumstances that lead the characters to act certain ways as shown in each episode.

It just shows you didn't watch the series completely.

I used to shame this kind of comment, seemingly baseless during the time of the series airing until its special episode.

There are bigoted people who come to watch this series and tried to be like
Roger Ebert without even completing it, without even understanding the actions and the justifications as well as the circumstances the lead the characters to act the certain ways.

People are saying it's about a homophobic character without even understanding why this character came to be that way.

This series has a dark undertone that it may not be your cup of tea. But writing a review because its portrayal didn't provide you with enough closure just shows your lack understanding of it. That's why viewers like me have to rewatch the episodes for us to gain understanding of certain circumstances happening in certain episodes. Gestures and subtle expressions and reactions from the engagements of the characters are to be noted and for us to connect the dots to arrive at certain theories or conclusions.

That's why mature BL fans find TharnType to have a balance of engaging storyline despite its controversy and of intimacy as it belongs to a homoerotic genre.

As for a messy storyline, LOL. Can you even justify why you regard it as messy?

If the director and the writing team respected the author and followed the events in the novel despite some cut parts, then this would not have happened. The plot in the novels have more romantic scenes than in the series.

And from what I've learned, they didn't expect that they would get this much hype especially from the actors.

I feel like the author may have regretted the sale of this book to the network. Just maybe even though her other book. Theory of Love, was also sold to GMMTV and made into a series. But Theory of Love didn't get that much hype compared to 2gether.

This is the problematic trope that GMMTV is known for in its BL shows. Thai Lakorn is also known for portraying openly gay characters as comic characters as exemplified by the character Green in the show. The network is more on the agenda with the statement "love knows no gender". If you think Bright and Win first uttered this in their interview, you are wrong. It's the same statement Krist Perawat answered during an interview in Thailand during the popularity of Sotus. And so far, it's being prevalent on the concept during the tandem of TayNew and OffGun in their respective series.

Synchronicity

Don't forget Korn(gay) and Knock(bisexual). Knock admitted his being bisexual on the first episode of Bad Romance. Though we see Knock having a girlfriend on Together With Me, he experienced sexual awakening after a drunken night with his best-friend (Korn).

The thing newbie BL fans dismissed is that Korn and Knock started their relationship as best friends not on the night where they had drunken sex. Their prejudice was even baseless when they failed to watch Bad Romance where we first discover Korn and Knock, who are already a gay couple in that series.

As much as I wanted to have a season 2, I feel like having a sequel considering that the events in 2 books have been compressed in one season is like putting injustice to the original author.

Yes, it's known that GMMTV bought the rights but even if the author gained from the sale, I think it would be a disrespect to the author to add another season without her in the credit nor the lack of consultation that the producer and the network must seek from the author, Jittirain, considering the idea of the characters Sarawat and Tine is from her.

And for those commenting and disliking skinship and intimate scenes, you know there's still YouTube for you. Go stick there while the rest of those who want to see intimate scenes can watch on LineTV. But I know you're hypocrites, so you can still have the freedom to peek on LineTV.

Honestly, this show has attracted a slew of newbie fans who are hypocrites. Make yourself open-minded to male-to-male skinship unless you're nuns or religious bigots, like what are you even doing here watching BL?

I would give this show a chance though if the season 2 pushed through.

I feel like the actors' talents are wasted just because of mediocre writing, editing and direction of the series. And they must have a new director while the original author of the novel should be part of the writing team.

As for intimate scenes, again there's LineTV where they can show these scenes. There's no other excuse that they can craft unless they're too uncomfortable doing those scenes.

After more than a month being attacked by a rabid fan of the show here, I'm back.

And I understand the feeling of disappointment in the recent episodes. I actually stopped watching at ep10 until the series finishes to resume watching it. And by the looks of the comments here and in social media, I don't really expect much from the series as I also shared my disappointment to its direction as well as the director.

Now for those fans who are against WhyRU and TharnType and their intimate scenes, you must know that this is BL. It's a homoerotic genre where fans expect for intimate scenes. If you think you don't like it, go watch straight dramas instead, where you watch couples getting intimate after getting married.

And as for those who are defending for the series content rating being PG-13, are you aware that the rating only applies when the series is shown on Thai TV?

Other BL series shown on Thai TV have their intimate scenes censored but these NC scenes are shown on LineTV having a more adult rating.

When I learned about 2gether also being shown on LineTV, then they probably have intimate scenes on the recent episodes.

But why then the viewers are still complaining of the lack of intimate scenes in the recent episodes?

Why do 2gether's views on LineTV reached over 100M views when similar scenes are also shown on YouTube. Just to set a BL World record?

Perhaps, because of Chinese viewers? Kinda understandable. But still, it's possible for intimate scenes to be shown on LineTV.

The PG13 rating again only applies to ThaiTV. Rating on MyDramaList page can even be adjusted. And for the other fans to defend that the lack of intimate scenes, even just simple scenes to make them believable as gay couple living together, because of PG-13, that reasoning is just BS and invalid.

Clearly, there is something wrong with the writing and the direction which I pointed out a month ago. I was almost invested to this series but something stopped me when I reached ep. 10 because it's like I am just watching very close buddies living together.

I agree. My friend recommended Lovesick but I didn't really like it. It was with Sotus that I appreciate Thai BL but I still see it as a fantasy. And I agree that Bright and Win are attributed more for the series' success. I have kept on saying it here and yet people are always on attack mode. Lol

MyDramaList was not like that before in 2017. We used to freely criticize when we pointed out errors and we respect opinions. The more fans come here, the more toxic it becomes. I may have to rest this app for good as my other old peers may have done.

Well, I believe in the power of sexual healing. And just so you know, I also criticized TharnType so it would improve. Gladly, my expectation was met.

As for 2gether, it is still to early to say. I still attribute the series' success more on Bright and Win and not on its storyline.
