That is not what happened. He never cheated nor they 'split up' in bad term in the end. In fact, when she is forced to do the noble idiocy in S2, he remains single in those 3 years lol. There is 2 concubines where he is forced to take in the drama. But he most of the times said to them nicely that he dont want this marriage but they insisted for political reasons, even the FL forced him to take one of the concubines, again for political reasons and he doesnt want it.
For the end, he knew all about her plan leaving him because she is dying. He wanted to stop her but her bestfriend said, do it for her since she wants him to be happy so he reluctantly agrees. They spent some happy time together and then she leaves. He escorted her out of the palace in disguise at the end. There is no new Empress. This drama actually very addicting to watch. The conflicts are not stupid but actually brilliantly written. I rated it highly simply because the story is actually good and the casts have amazing chemistry together.
