Morally bankrupt characters
The series started out great and then progressively became worse. It has one of the worst male leads that I have come across in KDramas and that is saying something, considering Korean writers don't quite know what a man is, let alone a good man. At the beginning of the series, I felt sympathy for both Dong Ha and Bom Yi but as the series progressed that feeling became replaced with utter disdain. Dong Ha completely failed as a man, as a brother and as a father. He cares for no one apart from himself. No right thinking man could do the kind of things he kept doing, over and over again and the worst part is that not once did he feel any qualms about it, drowning in self pity. His performative victimhood became annoying to the point that I actually wanted to punch him in the face. Dong Ha, Bom Yi, Ji won and most of all the writer treated Dong Wook in the worst possible manner. He is the only character who deserves any sympathy. He is expected to lose over and over again and not just accept those loses but be gracious about them too. No one in this series cared for his feelings. It is a common theme in most dramas to treat secondary characters badly. Leads often use supporting characters and then abandon them because to the writer and supposedly the audience their feelings simply do not matter. Dong Wook is the only good character in this series and for that he has been skewered. Obviously he cannot make anyone fall in love with him or prevent anyone from falling out of love, but what he can do is cut ties with people who don't seem to care about him at all and his supposedly older brother should be the first on that list. I fail to express the disgust I felt for Dong Ha. He is everything a man should not be, should never be.Was this review helpful to you?
An assortment of despicable characters
I haven't completed this series yet but I felt compelled to write this review just to let some frustration out.The writer has went to great lengths to create characters that fail to evoke any warmth or sympathy at all. Apart from the female lead's father, there's not a single decent person in this series. The acting of the male and female leads is so bad that it will get under your skin and you'll want to punch your computer screen. Even Anna who is supposed to be a sympathetic character will stop evoking any sympathy as the show progresses. If I hear her say 'James' one more time, I am going to go ballistic. I am currently at episode 49 and by this point I am enjoying her being bullied. Every adult member of the female lead's family except her father is an entitled brat, especially her mother who is so loud that it will give you a headache. They are all of the opinion that it is okay to bite the hand that feeds them while demanding the next meal. Both the male and female leads are completely off putting. They keep talking about their 'dreams' without once acknowledging where their salaries are coming from. I have to fast forward most so-called romantic scenes involving them because they are just so excruciatingly bad. It's hard to imagine that they got paid for doing their jobs this badly. The writing itself is terrible. There's no logic to it whatsoever. Why are the characters doing what they are doing? Why are the obvious questions not being attended to? It's as if they are living in a reality where rules of logic just don't apply. Having said that, I suppose it does take some talent to do something this badly.
Past 70 episodes and the character that I hate the most is Anna. That retard has single handedly made the lives of everyone around her a living hell. She belongs in an asylum. The series just keeps getting worse as it progresses. The female lead's mother's entitlement is grating on me so much that I actually wish that the Kim family will just crush and destroy her. People like her deserve to be put in their place.
Past 90 episodes and Anna, the retard has turned even more annoying which I didn't think would have been possible. She is worse than a child and no sane man in this world can love that retard. Male lead constantly has a hangdog look on his face. The only emotion he knows is being pathetic. Female lead is loud and clueless as ever. Her mother and uncle are in close competition as to who can scream louder. The series itself is reaching a new level of frustrating.
