I agree that the script and the way the relationship is written play a very important role. A lack of romantic scenes certainly makes it harder for the audience to feel the chemistry between the leads. That said, even within those limitations, I think chemistry also depends on the actors’ interactions, expressions, and overall dynamic. For me, unfortunately, I’m still not feeling that natural spark between Wu Jinyan and Chen Zheyuan, although I agree that the script doesn’t give them many opportunities to develop it.
I have mixed feelings about Wu Jinyan’s performance in Royal Betrothal. She appears somewhat more tired and subdued than usual, which may be understandable given that she became a first-time mother only six months ago. While this is certainly not a criticism of her personally, I do feel that her current screen presence lacks some of the vitality and emotional intensity I have seen from her in previous dramas.
As for her pairing with Chen Zheyuan, unfortunately, I’m not feeling the romantic chemistry I had hoped for. Their interactions are pleasant enough, but the connection doesn’t always feel natural or convincing to me. The six-year age difference is also more noticeable on screen than I expected, particularly in their romantic scenes.
Both actors are talented in their own right, but so far, their dynamic hasn’t quite captured the spark needed to make their relationship fully believable and engaging 😒

I think the writers didn't dare go that far because they knew the backlash that character generated. Although we eventually discovered he wasn't the great villain we imagined and that many of his actions had other motivations, the audience had already condemned him from the moment the Gu clan was exterminated. That event marked the character irreversibly. They could have redeemed him, even made us understand his pain, but turning him into the man Xihe ended up with would have been too much for most of the audience.
Conclusion: don’t try too hard to understand The Mystic Nine — just sit back, embrace the madness, and enjoy the ride! 🤣
