I'm not sure I agree that he answered it unintentionally because he waited several seconds while Den walked away and he looked at the screen a few times before answering, though I agree that he didn't look happy. I'd have to rewatch but I thought that the first time he hit her, the car was going quite fast, like he was speeding, and she was neither breathing nor moving, but the second time, because the car wasn't going as fast and he was expecting her, the impact wasn't as hard and that's when we saw her obviously breathing.
You are right that the first time he didn't check her to make sure she was alive or dead, which is definitely not what we'd want or expect him to do, and does let us know that maybe he's not as good of a person as we'd like him to be.
