Looking at the lists of JTBC’s top 10 dramas, or the top 10 dramas in cable TV, I suspect JTBC or the industry know what genres and timeslots are popular and what not. It appears that no Sci Fi drama is on the top 10 of these rating lists. None of the top 10 JTBC dramas were scheduled in the Wednesday/Thursday time slots like Sisyphus. Therefore, while rating is an important factor, JTBC does not seem to try to follow a past proven success formula. For its 10-year anniversary project, the channel is willing to support and invest in many new elements in a Sci Fi/action project as listed in your article.
Determining the contribution of JTBC’s Sisyphus in the K drama industry should not be limited by domestic rating alone. Sisyphus on Netflix has reached top 10 in countries outside Asia, for example, Greece, Norway and Sweden. It is too early to tell the amount of goodwill this show has generated on K Sci Fi. Time will tell.
I hope writers and producers will continue to be creative and willing to give us a new level of surprise. I applaud JTBC does not just give us what was popular in the past. It is willing to take K Sci Fi/Acton show to the next level and yet retained the emotion K dramas are especially good at. It has done the hard work to take audience out of the traditional comfort zone. While some may still prefer a traditional genre/ storytelling style and rather rate that favourably, I felt some audience like myself are ready for something new.
