What really makes this drama work, however, is the chemistry between the residents and the sense of community inside the apartment complex. The drama does an excellent job of creating a believable neighborhood atmosphere. The residents do not feel like random supporting characters who exist only to help move the main plot forward. Their personalities, conflicts, interactions, and gradual relationships with one another give the apartment a sense of life. Over time, the setting itself almost becomes another character in the story.

The found-family chemistry is easily one of the strongest aspects of the drama. What begins as a fake or transactional relationship gradually develops into something much more genuine. The characters slowly start caring about each other, and the drama handles this development naturally rather than forcing emotional moments too early. By the later episodes, you can genuinely feel why these people have become important to one another. This aspect was also one of the elements viewers responded to most strongly, particularly the growing sense that the "fake family" had become a real family.

The cast also deserves credit for making this chaotic group dynamic work. The comedy is often exaggerated and absurd, but the actors understand the tone of the drama. They know when to play a scene broadly and when to bring it back to something more sincere. Ha Yoon-kyung, in particular, fits the energetic and comedic tone very well, while the interactions between the main characters and the supporting residents provide many of the drama's most enjoyable moments. The humor works best when it comes directly from the characters' personalities and their increasingly complicated relationships rather than from forced jokes.

From a storytelling perspective, the drama also deserves praise for its genre balance. The main conflict involves corruption, money, power, and morally questionable characters, but the show rarely becomes too dark or heavy. Instead, it packages serious issues in a relatively accessible and entertaining way, often using absurd situations and comedy to keep the tone light. This makes easier to watch than a typical crime thriller drama, although the large number of characters and subplots can occasionally make the narrative feel a little crowded.

That said, episodes 8–10 were probably the weakest stretch for me. The pacing becomes noticeably slower, and some parts feel like the story is temporarily losing momentum before reaching its final stretch. After the drama spends the earlier episodes building its conflicts and relationships, these episodes occasionally feel repetitive or less urgent than they should. The plot is still moving forward, but not always with the same energy and freshness as before. Personally, I found episodes 8–10 a little boring, especially compared with the stronger buildup in the earlier episodes.

This is where the drama could have benefited from tighter editing. Some scenes could have been shortened, and certain developments did not need as much time as they received. Ironically, while some viewers felt the later episodes maintained the excitement, the slower pacing around this section may depend heavily on whether you are more invested in the plot or in the characters themselves.

Overall, this drama succeeds because it understands that its greatest strength is, not simply the mystery surrounding the money or the corruption plot. Its real heart lies in the people living together, arguing with each other, helping each other, and gradually becoming something close to a family. The chemistry between the neighbors is excellent, and the drama captures the feeling of a community in a very warm and entertaining way.

The crime plot gives the story direction, the comedy keeps it fun, but the family and neighborhood chemistry is what makes the drama memorable. Even when the pacing slows down in episodes 8–10, I still wanted to continue because I had become attached to the characters and their relationships.

Even the VILLAINS ended up getting a happy ending too, SERIOUSLY?

I haven’t read the novel, so I’m judging purely based on the drama adaptation. And honestly, I really enjoyed it.

Almost everything about this drama works for me. There aren’t many flashy martial arts scenes or impressive fight choreographies, but I don’t think the drama needs them. The real focus is on political intrigue, mind games, and the characters constantly trying to outsmart each other. That actually kept me interested because there was always something going on beneath the surface.

The acting is great, the costumes look beautiful, the warm color tone gives the drama a really pleasant atmosphere, and the filming locations are gorgeous. Even when the story gets heavy with one conflict after another, the visuals make it surprisingly easy to keep watching. It never felt visually boring to me.

The romance, however, is extremely slow-burn. A big part of the reason is that the wedding is dragged out for so long. At some point I was genuinely like,

"please, just let these two get married already!"

And because the FL is still very young at the beginning of the story, their early relationship doesn’t really feel like a mature romance either. It has more of that innocent, awkward, almost teenage-crush kind of feeling. They clearly care about each other, but the romantic development is so subtle that sometimes it feels more like two teenagers slowly figuring out what having feelings for someone actually means.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially considering the FL’s age and the circumstances of the story, but if you’re watching this specifically for a strong romance, you might be disappointed. The drama spends much more time on political schemes, family conflicts, survival, and their journey together than on romantic moments.

Still, once you become emotionally invested in their journey, the payoff hits differently. We’ve watched the main leads struggle, suffer, and overcome so many things together that when they finally get their happiness, I genuinely felt happy for them too. It felt like we had gone through that difficult journey with them.

I do wish the drama had shown more of what happened to them after everything was over, though. The ending for the main leads is actually quite vague. We’re basically shown that they’re finally living freely and happily with their daughter, but we’re never really given a clear explanation of what they ultimately became. After spending so much time watching them fight their way through everything, I wanted a little more closure about their future.

My biggest problem, though, is the ending.

It was way too happy for everyone, including the villains. And honestly, that annoyed me more than it should have.

Minister Yu gets killed by his own son, but that’s basically it. He dies without ever being properly judged or punished for everything he did. There’s no real sense of justice or consequences.

And then there’s Yu Jing Xiu and his mother. After everything they did, especially to the FL, and the role they played in his father’s death, I really expected them to face something much harsher. Instead, Yu Jing Xiu gets to stay alive with his mother and his child. Sure, they’re poor now, but they’re still alive, they’re together, and he even gets the chance to marry again. Like… SERIOUSLY ???? That is an incredibly happy ending for someone who did so many terrible things.

The ministers who helped the Yu family also, we don’t even get proper execution scenes or clear consequences for many of the villains. Everyone just somehow gets to move on with their lives.

So while I really enjoyed the journey, the ending left me with mixed feelings. The main leads absolutely deserved their happiness after everything they went through, but I wish the drama had given us a stronger sense of justice. Instead, it almost feels like the villains got their own version of a happy ending too.

Became a couple in the last 2 episodes. What is the point of calling the drama "Genius Girlfriend"

I had been looking forward to Genius Girlfriend for quite some time. The premise sounded genuinely interesting, and of course, Tian Xi Wei being part of the cast was another major reason I wanted to watch it. The idea of following a genius girl from childhood, her academic journey, rivalry, friendships, and eventually romance had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, while the drama does several things well, its pacing and especially its handling of romance prevented it from fully delivering on that potential.

Tian Xi Wei's acting is, unsurprisingly, one of the drama's biggest strengths. She plays a genius student who is innocent, socially awkward, and initially struggles to understand other people's emotions and relationships. Her intelligence is established from childhood, her personality also makes her character more interesting because, despite being exceptionally intelligent academically, she is far less knowledgeable when it comes to friendship, social interaction, and love. The ML feels too passive, and his acting sometimes comes across as stiff.

The relationship and rivalry between the two main leads is another important part of the story. Their connection develops over many years, and the mathematical competition arc is probably one of the most enjoyable parts of the drama. Watching them compete while being on different teams, searching for members for their respective teams, and facing each other academically was genuinely fun.

What I particularly liked was seeing the FL experience defeat for the first time. For someone who had always been exceptional, losing becomes an important moment in her development. However, the experience also gives her something she did not have before: friends. Her growth from being a lonely genius into someone who discovers the happiness of friendship is one of the more satisfying aspects of the story. The friendship chemistry among the cast is also quite good, and I honestly found some of these relationships more convincing than the romantic ones.

The family conflicts surrounding the characters are handled quite well too. Each character has their own struggles and family issues, which helps give the story more emotional depth beyond school and mathematical competitions.

However, the biggest problem for me is the pacing.

The high school storyline lasts for around 17 episodes, which feels far too long considering that the drama only has 28 episodes. A slow pace is not necessarily a bad thing, but if the story wanted to spend that much time on the characters' younger years and gradual development, then perhaps it should have been a 30+ episode drama. Instead, the drama spends too much time slowly developing the school years and then suddenly rushes almost every romantic relationship toward the ending.

As a result, the romance feels forced and underdeveloped.

The main couple's romance is especially disappointing. I never really felt strong chemistry between them, and their relationship often feels more like a high school puppy love than a romance that developed naturally over many years. The FL is extremely innocent and does not understand love, while the ML is written and performed in a way that feels too passive. Personally, I also found the ML's acting rather stiff, which made it even harder for me to connect with his character emotionally.

By episode 26, the FL finally realizes that she loves the ML, and they officially start dating. But this left me asking: what is the point of calling the drama "Genius Girlfriend" when FL is only actually ML's girlfriend for the final two episodes?

Seriously, that is crazy.

And unfortunately, even after they finally become a couple, I still could not feel their chemistry. The drama spends so much time building their supposed connection, but when they finally get together, there is barely enough time to show what their relationship is actually like.

There are also several missed opportunities. For example, there is no meaningful interaction between the ML and the FL's parents. This feels particularly strange considering the FL says that she wants to marry the ML so that he can have a family after she is gone. If their future and marriage are supposedly important to her, then why not show more interaction between the ML and the people who would become his family?

The second couple also does not work very well for me. Their relationship feels more like two close friends constantly arguing than an actual romantic couple. Meanwhile, the third couple receives almost nothing. There are only one or two scenes showing that they might be attracted to each other in High School era, and then suddenly the drama expects us to accept their romantic ending.

By the final episodes, it feels as if the writers suddenly remembered that everyone needed to have a romance. The conclusions for all the couples feel rushed, forced, and lacking in proper development.

This drama is a drama that I wanted to love much more than I actually did. It has a strong premise, a good female lead performance, enjoyable friendship dynamics, and an entertaining academic competition arc. Tian Xi Wei is once again reliable, and her character's journey from an isolated genius to someone who learns about friendship and emotions is genuinely interesting. A good coming-of-age story with strong friendship and character development, but a surprisingly weak and rushed romance.

ABSOLUTELY DESERVES TO BE CROWNED ONE OF THE BEST DRAMAS !!!

Honestly, this drama is too good, to the point that I kept putting off finishing it because I simply didn't want to leave the world of this drama. You know that feeling when you're watching something you really love and instead of rushing to the ending, you start slowing down because you already know that once it's over, that's it? That's exactly what happened to me.

And after finally finishing it... YEP. IT REALLY DID NOT DISAPPOINT !!!

TWO PEOPLE WHO COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER AND, WHEN PROBLEMS COME UP, CHOOSE TO FACE THE PROBLEMS TOGETHER INSTEAD OF MAKING DECISIONS OR TRYING TO HANDLE EVERYTHING ON THEIR OWN AND CREATING UNNECESSARY MISUNDERSTANDINGS, NEW CONFLICT AND ENDS UP MAKING THE RELATIONSHIP EVEN WORSE.❤️

Almost everything about this drama works for me. The production, OST, cinematography, costumes, sets, there really isn't much I can complain about. Even the color tone is beautifully done and fits the atmosphere of the story so well. And whenever the snow appears, the visuals are just gorgeous. It's the kind of drama where sometimes I catch myself paying more attention to the scenery because everything looks so beautiful.

The acting is also consistently great, from the main leads all the way to the supporting cast. Even the child actress playing Fan Chang Ning deserves some credit. In the earlier episodes, her acting was still a little awkward, and there were moments where it felt like she was looking somewhere else instead of fully being in the scene. But she noticeably improved throughout the drama, and by the end, you could really see how much more comfortable she had become.

And the chemistry between the cast is honestly one of the things that makes the whole drama feel alive. You can actually feel the relationship between the characters rather than just being told that they have feelings for each other. The main couple's feelings develop naturally, and you can genuinely see them falling in love with each other. The second couple has that love-hate dynamic that is fun to watch, while the third couple feels more like a youthful, almost teenage kind of romance. Each relationship has its own flavor instead of every couple being written exactly the same way.

What impressed me the most, though, is how well the web novel was adapted and visualized. The story translates really well onto the screen, and the drama manages to communicate the characters' motivations and emotional development without making everything unnecessarily complicated. Every episode feels like it actually has something worth watching.

And THANK GOD there aren't endless misunderstandings and dragged-out conflicts just for the sake of filling episodes.

This is probably one of my favorite things about this drama. When a problem appears, the characters actually deal with it. Things get resolved without feeling rushed, but they also don't keep dragging the same issue for ten episodes just to extend the runtime.

We don't get all those tired drama clichés either like the third person creating a misunderstanding that lasts forever, one of the leads suddenly choosing someone else "to protect" the other person or the FL suddenly falling into another man's arms and vice versa, unnecessary kidnappings, pointless sacrifices that nearly get FL or ML killed just to create another conflict, or a dozen other mainstream tropes that exist purely because the writers need another obstacle and conflict to create tension. I appreciate this so much.

The drama trusts its own story enough that it doesn't need to manufacture ridiculous problems every few episodes. The characters have actual conflicts to deal with, and the story allows them to solve those conflicts like actual people instead of constantly making them misunderstand each other for the sake of drama.

The character development is another huge strength. Almost everyone gets their own story and their own path, so the characters don't feel like they're only there to support the main couple. You can actually feel that every person has their own life, history, motivations, and future.

But the biggest character journey for me is definitely the FL.

Watching Fan Chang Yu go from a simple village girl who dreams of raising pigs and becoming a butcher to eventually becoming a great general is honestly one of the most satisfying parts of the entire drama.

And what makes it work is that she doesn't suddenly become amazing overnight just because she's the FL. Her circumstances force her to grow. Her family's past, the situations she finds herself in, and the people she loves gradually push her onto a completely different path. She starts out with such a simple dream — basically just wanting to raise pigs, become a butcher, and live a peaceful life — but life has other plans for her.

Eventually, she becomes a general not because she suddenly decides she wants power or glory, but because she wants to protect her family and the person she loves.

Tian Xi Wei did such a great job bringing Fan Chang Yu to life. She really made the character feel like a person rather than just "the strong female lead."

⭐And this is what I think a TRULY INDEPENDENT AND STRONG FEMALE LEAD should look like.⭐

She's capable, but she doesn't need to constantly announce that she's strong. She's smart, but she doesn't suddenly lose all of her intelligence whenever second male lead or another man enters the scene. She can fight for herself, make her own decisions, and deal with difficult situations without constantly needing the ML or another man to rescue her.

📌That's something I get frustrated with in a lot of dramas. They introduce an FL as "strong, independent, and intelligent," but the moment she interacts with a second male lead or another man, suddenly all that strength and intelligence disappears. She becomes helpless, makes stupid decisions, or needs someone else to save her.

Pursuit of Jade doesn't do that.

She grows stronger, but she doesn't lose the innocent and straightforward side of herself that made her who she was in the beginning. Her development feels earned rather than forced.

And the same goes for the ML. Their relationship isn't simply about him saving her or her becoming dependent on him. They grow together, support each other, and eventually become partners who can actually stand beside one another.

By the time I reached the ending, I really didn't want to say goodbye to this drama. That's probably the biggest compliment I can give this drama.

For me, Pursuit of Jade genuinely deserves to be one of the best dramas of 2026, and honestly, it might even be one of the best dramas I've watched.

There are plenty of dramas that I enjoy watching once and then never think about again. This isn't one of them. This is absolutely a drama I would rewatch, and considering I literally delayed finishing it because I didn't want to leave its world, I think that says everything.
