He will wait till she gets in the book, if that makes sense, and by then he will be the same age as her. For instance, Zhang San will go back to 2011 (im sorry i dont know the year I'm just guessing ) and Wanyin to 2026. Now, as for the death part, my only guess is that he did not know what would happen after they died in the novel, so he just prioritised survival.
