Do you know, Mysterious Lotus Casebook is a Buddhist story, and it is so successful? Till the End of the Moon is somehow Daoist, and it is successful. Some other drama is a bit Confucian, like Nirvana in Fire, and they are successful. Personally, I love stories that have root in culture and society's philosophy, IF they are told well. Even I enjoy series "as boring as" Shaolin Wendao, because it is CLEAR. The message is delivered so well because the story is told effectively.

You have very good actors, a unique story, wardrobe, and technology to support this and that... yet the story structuring, telling technique, plotline, character writing, and other things are REALLY messed. Where is the enlightment when the main character is never showed reflecting about this himself?
Compare TLC with Li Lianhua in MLC. LLH inner world is rich with emotions and thoughts, and crystal clear to read, so we understand his spiritual journey and his decision in the end. Both characters started similarly (from downfall and saved by a monk) and choose similarly in the end (to sacrifice themselves), but we are touched by LLH, while disappointed by TLC. Even when TLC finally learns about his mother, no enough room for reflection and realization, to experience the flow of natural emotion. This scene is treated just like other informative scene. This overall drama doesn't connect with audience's psychology.
