Fun and well-acted by the leads
As silly as this was, especially towards the ending of the drama, I can't for the life of mine rate it lower than 7,5. Simply because I had so much fun watching and binged it in two days.
This show gave me a vibe that I thought was lost in Asian dramas. I was being reminded of old Taiwanese and Japanese shows, the classics like Devil Beside You or Hana Yori Dango (version with Jun Matsumoto and Inoue Mao). It was over the top, funny, at times fawn-worthy too, with a very likable female lead.
In fact, female lead was probably my favourite part of the show. She was cute, bus sassy; naive, but not bottomlessly dumb; sometimes shy, but also not scared to take the initiative in romantic situations. Her antics while pursuing the ML got me giggle in the most delightful version of second-hand embarrassment. And may I just add that I started watching Blend Feelings because of He Changxi. The very fact that FL occupied my attention and totally stole my heart speaks volumes about her likability.
Another huge strength of this drama is the acting of the lead actors. Both did a genuinely good job, individually and as a couple. The chemistry between them was convincing, so where the intimate scenes. All in all, they ended up making me feel puzzled how come they haven't get casted in bigger productions... (I've felt like that about Changxi for some time now, but now I also feel the same about Zhang Chu Han). The performance of the rest of the actors is much weaker in comparison, but since it's generally all about the leads anyway, I didn't feel like it hindered my experience.
As for the plot... let's be real for a moment. Neither of us watches those mini dramas for great storytelling or ambitious writing. They're usually more of a guilty pleasure than an actual spiritual experience with art 😋Having said that, I honestly think the plot had its moments. It also had plenty of ridiculous developments and recycled tropes... But the intrigue was fairly thought-out at its core and the motivations of villains (as simple as they were) were somewhat convincing, while the twists made sense more or less... I wouldn't call the script great, but it certainly wasn't the worst either.
The last episode was too much though, and it nearly made me lower my rating. I was completely blindsided by the sudden super-hero-like abilities of the ML 😂
Cinematography was... bearable. I would've preferred if the camera wasn't so dead set on constant Dutch angles. Sometimes they made sense, but most times they just looked like the camera man was drunk.
All in all, however, a genuinely entertaining experience and - unironically - one of the contemporary cdramas I liked the best.
