I really like Charmaine Sheh as an actress. I started watching The Story of Yanxi Palace and got really bored 5 episodes in and abandoned it. Then I watched a couple of scenes on YouTube to see where the story was going. I came across one of Charmaine Sheh's scenes and then I just kept digging up all her scenes in the drama. She's such a riveting performer. Her gradual descent to "villainy" but with such a restrained and empathetic depiction is just my cup of tea. Judging by your review, I think I'll do just that with this drama as well. It's disappointing that Cdramas nowadays focus on young looking actors and youthful roles. So many fantastic actresses and stories are supporting cast and secondary plots just because they deal with a more mature cast and issues.

I will watch any and every version of Guo Fen Ye. He Ting Zhou is a pretty atypical ML, a true rogue with nary a sign of shyness anywhere. Chen Si is very good in this one but this lacks a solid 2ML presence. He's rather wish washy. My favourite version is still The Prince is Wild/He's Too Wild but, as I said, I like the story and character that every version is good as long as they keep the lead characters personality the same.

Had fun during the first half. Didn't need the unnecessary ex-fiance. Even the break up was dumb. I didn't get it. Both Ji hyuk and his ex made it clear they were no longer engaged so I don't understand why Ji Won broke up with him. Frankly, I keep hoping Kdrama producers will realize that 16 episodes are too many for the stories they want to tell.

Totally agree with your review. I abandoned it after watching all the women throw themselves in an undignified fashion at the men, but FL crashing ML's engagement was the last straw for me. And while I don't have a problem with him falling for a girl with his sister's face, I kept waiting for at least one person to point out how weird it was in-universe.

Grandma had a better romance plot than the titular FL

Tell me about it. I was screaming at why any self respecting drug cartel would invent and distribute a drug that almost immediately kills their customers. Drugs need to get the customers coming back for more over an extended period of time. The whole "antidote" thing is also dumb as again, this is a one time proposition. It would've made more sense if they were selling this as a strength enhancer to criminal organisations, terrorists, sportsmen, etc.

Oh well. It was entertaining at times. I really don't understand why so much time was spent on the mother's near constant glamour shots. Overdone. That time could've been spent building up Nam Soon's relationship with her love interest. We needed to feel their relationship developing or bringing gradual change in each other. But they fell in love and stayed exactly who they were at the beginning of the show. Angst can be overdone but, damn it, we need some angst in order to be invested. Even her relationship with the villain was dumb. That could've been a super important part of her own personal development but, no. It was nothing. The problem, I think, was too many characters with too many separate plotlines which were entirely unnecessary and, worse, had zero impact on character or the development of the main plot.

"Embroiled"? Is she married? Why is this even news unless one of them is married? Good lord!
