I'm trying to decide if I should watch this or not. I loved Story of Minglan. I don't mind romance but I much…
This is definitely a more romance-heavy story versus plot-heavy. I'm here for the romance and even though I don't really pay attention to the political stuff, I still understand what's going on so it's not that deep (even the palace coup was resolved within a couple minutes). The first half is mostly family drama as well so if you dislike petty harem drama and decide to watch, then be prepared for that.
I just love CYY and GJZ's relationship. It's mature and filled with mutual respect and love. I adore how they literally tell each other everything (except for her little infatuation with CXQ, but it was essentially negligible considering it never progressed into anything meaningful).
all the family members are ragebaiting me ohmygod from jinzhaoβs paternal family then now in yanyunβs family…
I think the families are victims to the era they exist in. Petty household squabbles aren't surprising since that's how they were all raised and don't know any different. Male leads are usually different since they've had the privilege of broadening their horizons through travel and having multiple teachers. Female leads are usually different because they were raised by other headstrong women (mainly grandmothers) who allowed them to be carefree.
I decided to read the novel before watching the drama. I surprisingly really enjoyed the novel despite being icked…
I find that with a lot of IP dramas, the male leads have to be changed quite a bit to make them more likable in a drama setting. Although, considering the 15 year age gap between them, it would be weirder in the novel if he was still single with no kids at his age. But I am glad they changed it for the drama.
Hierarchy-wise, what is Chen Yan Yun's title in the beginning? He's a court official and is obviously very powerful...but he doesn't seem to have an official title aside from "Third Master" (obviously because he's the third son in his household). It seems like he basically does whatever he wants with little to no repercussions too.
Now that I'm rewatching episodes I loved, my dumbass finally realized that the Xie generals under Xie Zheng have numbers for names π And yes, I realize they likely aren't from the Xie clan at all and probably adopted the last name of their lord which is why they are so loyal.
I think the confession scene in episode 36 after XZ gets beaten is my fave scene of the entire drama. I feel like…
My favorite scenes in this drama: Ep. 9 when she returns with Li Huai'An and finds Xie Zheng on the ground, passed out. When he wakes up they are both touching each other's cheeks. It felt like the first time they openly acknowledged how much they cared for each other. Ep. 27 when he proposes to her. His sincerity made me cry Ep. 36 when he introduces her to his family at their memorial sites
Highkey the rebellion was SO disappointing like wdym qi min planned for 6 years for treason but he relied on the…
I've learned over years of drama watching to make my peace with things I would normally nitpick. At its core, Pursuit of Jade is a romance so I'll just focus on the romance and ignore the other stuff that just serves to move the story along π
It truly is!! I went into this drama not even considering this was going to be female-centric. I didn't read the novel, but I assumed it was their story, like, equally. I personally thought the beginning up until around Ep. 27 was near perfection. Once his identity was revealed, whatever magic was going on slowly withered away. I loved Chang Yu's character but even I thought she got too much screen time. Xie Zheng felt like a side character in his own story. Even his revenge against his uncle went from getting revenge for his parents to getting justice for HER's instead.
It really started when he started investigating past cases. So, basically the very beginning of the story.
That's what I thought but the transition for me was strange. We see right at the beginning that he thinks his uncle is after his life for starting his investigation but then are told that his uncle got him the best instructors and in the scene where he's sparring with General He, Xie Zheng looked to his uncle for approval so it made me rethink their relationship
I love when the main villains who are thought of as power-hungry, selfish, and heartless are actually shown to be the ones that loved the hardest and that's how/why they became the villain.
I loved it because he only did when he was with her. On the flip side, I wish we could've shifted the focus more to him once we entered the capitol so we could see his ruthlessness with everyone else. It would've had a bigger impact for us to see how cold he is to everyone else versus how soft he was with her.

Honestly, I was really only here for the romance. I could fast forward through all the political stuff and not miss out on anything π The romance was just perfection while everything else...was meh at best π
Did Xie Zheng always hold such animosity towards his uncle? No, correct? Did this start after his parents died? Or when he started investigating what happened those 17 years ago? He grew up "loved" while his uncle raised him (in as much as his uncle was capable of showing love).

The scene where they emerged from under the blankets was taken out π
Ep. 9 when she returns with Li Huai'An and finds Xie Zheng on the ground, passed out. When he wakes up they are both touching each other's cheeks. It felt like the first time they openly acknowledged how much they cared for each other.
Ep. 27 when he proposes to her. His sincerity made me cry
Ep. 36 when he introduces her to his family at their memorial sites
The nuanced scenes in this drama are spectacular.
