I thought I couldn't love an episode more than episode 11, but episode 12 dropped and when I tell you I BAWLED my eyes out. I knew Lu Feng had some sort of mental illness (takes one to know one) but my bet was on severe abandonment and separation issues with borderline personality disorder; him being diagnosed with bipolar disorder is very understandable - his outbursts, and his severe mood swings with mania in the mix were clear signs of bipolar disorder type 1 (severe highs [mania] to deep lows [depression])
Episode 12 did such a wonderful job showing the effects and episodes of bipolar depression (I have major depression, so I know how unmedicated depression looks like), but I thought Lu Feng's outbursts were more a manifestation of borderline personality disorder. His obsessive love towards Xiao Chen, coupled with years of pain and abandonment, and adding his mental illness to the mix was a recipe for disaster, and Lu Feng had to be hospitalized otherwise he would've flown over the edge (even more so than he did in episodes 9&10) - he would've actually hurt Xiao Chen or himself (murder / suicide)
Xiao Chen doing his best to understand Lu Feng's illness is such an important thing for a partner to do, as mental illness is a lifetime chronic illness and going unmedicated, unregulated, and incomprehensible would be a danger to the patient and people around them.
This show is my absolute favorite for 2026 so far; topping even Revenged Love, ABO Desire and To My Shore (which are 3 of my top 10 Chinese bls) Double Helix has become #1 on my list and I'm so sad that it ended so quickly πeasily a 10/10 series
I can't wait for AyLio's next projects (together or separate, I don't care, I just want to see them again)
edit: will be posting a review after rewatching the series and giving a comprehensive examination of the show.
Episode 11 is the BEST one so far. The raw emotions that were displayed were both heartbreaking and healing - it was filled with sadness, regret, guilt, uncertainty, and love. The way Lu Feng was trying his hardest to try and make amends, to make sure that Xiao Chen understood that he loved him, the regret he felt, the guilt that consumed him, it was palpable (Ayden once again outdid himself with the talented acting). Granted, Lu Feng would spend the REST OF HIS LIFE making it up to Xiao Chen, to remedy the disaster that he created because of his wrathful obsessive love, but knowing him, he will happily, obediently spend the rest of his life groveling at Xiao Chen's feet.
The sadness, uncertainty, and hurt Xiao Chen showed were unmistakable in his eyes. He wanted to trust Lu Feng again, to accept his apology, to completely and utterly submit to him, and to accept his love and allow himself to love Lu Feng once again; he finally accepted Lu Feng's love, accepted his own love for Lu Feng, because toxic or not, dark love or not, they are each other's one and only and it's a lot easier for them to be together than apart.
NOW, the last minute of the episode gave me a little scare. After they did the deed (the NC scene was FIRE), Lu Feng lovingly held Xiao Chen in his arms, and then Xiao Chen said his brother's name in his sleep (probably just sleep-talking), but Lu Feng, being the obsessive bastard that he is started to revert back to a semblance of his old self. The way he tightly pulled Xiao Chen into his arms, only to pan over to him looking at himself in the mirror, with a tiny glimmer of the deranged, obsessive look in his eyes and the morbid music made me go "oh, shit".
Let's just hope their end is cute and happy because I want that happiness for them, despite the trauma.
you must not have watched straight thai lakorns or old chinese dramas because they were even more toxic than Double…
yo don't have to ... i'm just saying that toxic / dark / obsessive love happens in both straight and gay relationships, it's not exclusive to the gays, and despite that, many of us love watching and immersing ourselves in these storylines.
Ik people will say its fictional but why people are promoting these toxic series? There is no consent, no empathy,…
you must not have watched straight thai lakorns or old chinese dramas because they were even more toxic than Double Helix ... the dark aspect of these stories is taken on as "fictional" and "fantasy"; some people take it as a form of therapy, while others watch because they enjoy dark storylines and grey/antagonistic main characters (like myself), but if what Lu Feng did to Xiao Chen happened in real life, we would run for the hills.
- at this point, we have to accept the fact that they might stay together ... some relationships are toxic and remain functioning (barely). LuFeng's toxicity reminds me of Kelvin from thai bl Yesterday; he was just as bad as LuFeng, except he was the bottom kidnapping and imprisoning his top (Veir) ... before kidnapping him however, he ruined his family's company by tricking him into a partnership that led to the Acquisition of his company, he got him kidnapped by thugs, and gang-beaten (in the novel he planned for him to be gang-r@ped but they changed it in the series) he later stalked Veir, kidnapped him, chained Veir to the bed/dinning table, and r@ped him - but they still ended up together.
- The scene where LuFeng was taunting Zhuo Lan while assaulting XiaoChen, the cello music was so haunting, morbid, and dreadful, and it had LuFeng's madness written all over it .
- The way LuFeng was talking to XiaoChen in the hospital -this man is OBSESSED and i think its about time we just accept it.
- YiChen junior PISSED ME OFF, AGAIN... like he had his moment of clarity and accountability for his bullshit towards LuFeng, and not blaming LuFeng for his accident, telling XiaoChen to be selfish for once and doing what makes him happy - ONLY to tell him to leave with him π« he KNOWS that being with LuFeng is what makes him happy, toxicity and all, and he STILL tries to control his older brother *deep sigh* like he makes me so angry its not even funny.
- XiaoChen needs to OPEN HIS FCKING MOUTH AND TALK ... talk about his feelings, what he wants, and to tell people sticking their noses in his business to FCK OFF. Granted, he's gonna need a long time to overcome what LuFeng did to him, but he needs to SPEAK HIS MIND, to stop being a puppet in everyone's hand and to just TALK MY GUY.
- THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT when the bathtub scene came ... I was finally "YES, THANK GOD," I was worried they weren't gonna show the scene. After watching the scene, i paused, leaned back in my chair and went "girl, your moral compass is fcked, because wdym you're so happy the scene was shown while LuFeng is assaulting YiChen on screen?" granted, YiChen was responsive, but still, it was an abusive situation and here i was fangirling over the scene π (i blame Ayden's fine ass)
- WHY did his whiny brother show up again though? like be in your little bubble and fck off please.
- the start of episode 9, the scene where YiChen was apologizing to LuFeng, while LuFeng was being manipulative and wicked gave me the same feeling of dread i felt watching the bathroom confrontation scene in episode 10 of To My Shore. LuFeng reminded me so much of how manipulative, deceptive, and malicious FanXiao was in that mirror scene while talking to ShuLang. i felt claustrophobic watching both scenes, like i was in the place of YiChen & ShuLang, feeling helpless, trapped, and so backed into a corner without any means of escape.
- Ayden did such a wonderful job this episode, portraying the deranged anger that LuFeng felt towards YiChen. The way he paraded all those men in front of YiChen, making him believe that he was fcking them with YiChen within earshot.
- The way LuFeng's neck and forehead veins were popping when he would look down on YiChen, whether during the bathtub scene or the bed scene (why was Ayden looking the hottest during these scenes tho? ππ), the unhinged look in his eyes when he mentally and sexually tormented YiChen, my God, such stellar acting - I was absolutely terrified (and a little turned on not gonna lie) of LuFeng.
- Also, the way LuFeng would still show little glimpses of love, adoration, and worry towards YiChen, oh he loves him so much, but the pain of betrayal is too great for LuFeng to simply forgive and forget... he's hurting YiChen, and in turn himself π
- THAT bathtub dream sequence (if it was even a dream) was so damn hot, but i was so pissed off when they cut THE bathtub scene from the trailer at the end of the episode (fingers crossed they show it in ep 10 because i am ITCHING for that scene where LuFeng was DEVOURING YiChen in the tub, which YiChen holding on for dear life and tearing LuFeng's back with his nails ππ)
- Can't wait for ep 10 tomorrow, from the preview we'll be getting the bullet scene π
And what do you mean Lu Feng doesn't get mad Ke Lo?
i cackled when i read that line ... like LuFeng is one of the most quick-to-anger, scariest, and most dangerous men ever π but sure, he never gets mad π
