Just came back here to say that I thought Joy of Life had ruined me for good in the sense that I hadn't felt so invested in any other drama since then as I had been in this franchise. But hey, I find myself thinking about the story, the dialogues, the acting of the cast of The prisoner of Beauty everyday and checking the time for the next episode to air, I even bought the express package, which is so against my principle (consider VIP subscription should cover all and that streaming platforms are out there for blood with them putting out express packages on every drama). Since you tube bloggers are saying this drama, though originated from a book, has undergone substantial modifications (elements of second life in the book) and the book was much richer in content, I actually would love a second season of the drama if the quality keeps up as it moves on. Anyway, I am loving this drama,it is not as big a big scale as joy of life, but in its own rights, it is very deserving. The production, directing, editing (a crucial step that make some dramas disappointing), the screenplay, the dialogues, the acting, the costumes, visuals, screenshootsnaee all so on point. So glad the drama came off the shelves and got to air.

Some you tube bloggers keep bringing up some anti Liu Yiu Ling's look comments. I personally think he is one handsome actor with great poise and very natural acting skills.His performance is no less than the big names that have been in the show business for ages. The fact that he can sing is a big plus. I didn't know him till The long ballad was aired, since then I have always enjoyed his work and hope that he will not end up dying in the end. I am totally enjoying this drama, the story is refreshing, and a strong female lead is my thing, the visuals, costumes, dialogues are so on point. Must give a shout out to the production and directing of the drama.

I started watching again this drama from the beginning and am loving it. The scene of the grandfather speaking with the female lead (practically their last meet) was simply beautiful, the looks on their faces, what they said to each other, the close up shots showing their feelings and love, the background music are so so touching. This is quality perfomance directed by great professionals.

He saw three of his period dramas, he died in all of them, so yes I am traumatized...

I do hope so, can't stand seeing him die in the end anymore..

love the atmosphere in various scenes and the dialogues, oh and the tension in the battle!Thought the directors did great work so I went to check out the the names, they indeed have directed some fantastic dramas!!

just started watching, the story is refreshing, cast are great, hope it will glue me to the couch, unlike other period dramas aired lately that I eventually dropped.

Oh dear, is it only me who can't tell who is who among the ministers serving in the court? Who is the elderly who dressed as a minister or sort that controls the blind witch? Doesn't he look like one of the relatives of the king?

I think the screenwriter forgot her totally, then some where along the line he/she was reminded of to being her back.Honestly, the screenplay writer dropped the ball, this drama has potentials but poorly exploited and even more so in the directing.

I actually prefer the sml to the ml and wish the FL would choose to be with him, though it is not in the script, I am afraid.
the sml is a true gentlan and his devotion to the FL is total, no matter the circumstances. The ml had his chance and he blew it, he then has more claim of the FL as brother and wants to claim her back deep down. I don't even like his acting in this drama, lack of expression and rigid in his poise. I have seen him in other TV series, he can do better.

the story has potentials, but the screenplay is really poor, events that are made up to drag the episodes on and the dialogues are mild and can practically be skipped without missing anything essential. This brother/sister relationship and the ever so slow courtship between the sml and the FL ia slow and near to boring. This drama is all and all a failure in screenplay, production and directing. I guess most people watch it in wait of something better.

I am watching this drama, again. China makes plenty of period dramas and screenplays are all over the place.I am particularly fond of costume dramas but many lack in content and/or performance. This drama, is one of those worth revisiting, watching again after a while and it still keeps me glued to the couch.

I am watching this drama again.The story, the script is so well written, uncommon content delivered by an excellent cast. Bai Jing Ting, the male lead was fantastic. A few years back I watched him in TV receiving a recognition during an award ceremony, he had only did modern dramas back then and he distinctly turned to the audience saying he was ready for period dramas and hoped he would be given the opportunity to do so. Well, some producer must have heard him and did just that. indeed he is also great in period dramas. He is such a natural.
