A Story About Vengeance And Justice
I went into this on a whim with no expectations and was surprised by just how good it was. A victim of human trafficking escapes after her mother is killed trying to protect her and is now out for justice. Under a new identity she does whatever it takes to get close to the woman who destroyed her life and take her down.
A lot of dramas with serious subject matter treat them like a “cool, traumatic character story”, a reason for the main character to be a badass. This show actually treats this story seriously.
The villain is incredibly evil. But she’s real evil. She acts the way a lot of real life evil people do. It’s not about being wicked, it’s about profit, power, and status. People who do this don’t see their victims as people. To them they are chattel. Something to be used or discarded at their discretion. It’s harrowing.
And our main character is not a badass revenge machine. She’s a person. A traumatized person, a person out for vengeance, but still just a normal person. She’s not a hardened killer, she’s not a super spy, she’s not emotionless and perfectly tactical. I love that she makes slip-ups, gets taken off guard and hurt, questions herself, gets scared. Sometimes you feel like maybe this is just too dangerous and she should walk away. But she’s a strong person.
There's scheming, melodrama, and all that normal dorama stuff, but it's always a clear story focused on a message. I think it was executed pretty amazingly. My small gripes are: there's 1 out of nowhere fourth wall break, the "native English speaker" side/background characters in England are not good at English and were very hard to understand, and there were a handful of shots with bad visual compositing effects (It was super obviously shot on green screen)
Ultimately though this could be seen as a cool story of revenge for what was done to her, it’s actually about protecting people so no one goes through what she did. The ending (I will not spoil) is fitting.
