Oh, I agree with that 100%. It lets down what is otherwise a very enjoyable drama. Here's yet another over the top villainy villain who is obsessed with the FL. At least we get a bit of a change this time and he hasn't been obsessed with her since the first time he saw her delicate white pinky closing a carriage curtain

She mentioned something about his position being hereditary, so it wouldn't surprise me if his parents deliberately picked a strong local woman for him, someone capable of supporting him in a very harsh environment, but it does surprise me that she was not taught to read, given his position.
