Yeah the ending is absurd. I didn't even feel anything because it was not believable for a second. This is not the Victorian-era British empire, we do not need shocking endings duct-taped on top of otherwise coherent stories just to please the censors.

Yes, it was another person, acting completely different and with a different voice, that Hao Ting says he has met on a mountain hike. But using the same actor made me feel like we were transported to a parallel dimension, where things are the same and yet completely different. Maybe it was meant as a setup for a second series, but really it does not make any sense. It should have been a pilot for series 2 or the first episode for series 2, but as final episode it makes zero sense.
Kanda Yoichi hates himself because he thinks he needs to hide his love for Senkawa Hikaru in order to avoid losing him as a "friend". He passed along this trauma to Akira, who also feels guilt about his feelings and about "having to" keep them from his brother as well. Their relationship is inauthentic and in continuing it they disrespect and bury their own feelings. Akira is unable to accept himself and be himself until Kanata finally tells him he sees this pattern and he needs to love himself. Yoichi is not able to fix his situation but eventually tries to actually help Akira by telling Hikaru to spend more time with him, so that Akira can finally feel accepted by his family and avoid relying on the toxic relationship with Yoichi.

I genuinely don't understand. What's the point of all these exaggerated, super fake and extremely kitsch palaces and all the European-style stuff? They're extremely offputting to me. Is it just to make NuNew look even more of a Disney princess? (No need, his face is enough.)
I got curious about His Man 2 due to Dabit's vlogs (they are very interesting! go watch them!) and I do not regret binge-watching it, though it wrecked my weekend plans. :D
Good points, however I'll note that all/most of those problematic actions and behaviours are explicitly called out (especially the lack of direct communication), so you might as well see the series as a way to educate on why you must avoid them. (As opposed to the usual BL trope where toxic relationship behaviours are just thrown in out of the blue to create some drama and fill a few episodes in the middle of the series.) They also explicitly deny theirs is an arranged marriage though it definitely looked that way.
The promotion of marriage equality felt appropriate as the two main characters are publicly exposed individuals so it is not realistic they could marry while keeping it a private matter. It's better than the BL series which depict a fantasy world where somehow the same-sex couples don't find any obstacle or prejudice against their relationship in society.
